As a lifelong reader and professional copywriter with an MFA in Writing, I strive to share my passion for learning by helping students reach their true potential. I will work with students to not only develop their skills but to experience the satisfaction that comes from mastering an essay, fully comprehending a great work of literature, or decoding a challenging math problem!

I have over 10 years of teaching and tutoring experience, having worked with students of all ages and backgrounds from kindergarten to college. Each group presents its own unique set of rewards, which I love about my job. Having taught high-school English (AP and regular) for several years and successfully guided many students through college admissions essays and research papers, I can confidently say that English is my speciality. That said, I also have ample experience tutoring algebra and test prep (ISEE/SAT/ACT), and I love it all!

I adapt my teaching methods to the student's learning style, breaking down the process step-by-step and encouraging students to take an active role in the learning process. By teaching with enthusiasm, I compel my students to find within themselves a true joy for learning.

ADHD

ADHD

Over the years I have tutored many students who have fallen behind in school because they struggle with ADHD. To help students get back on track, I teach them to practice better time management by setting deadlines for everything, using timers to stay on track, taking frequent breaks and writing all their assignments in a schedule book. I teach them to be more organized by using lists, color-coding and reminders. I help these students maintain focus during tutoring sessions by having them play an active role in the lessons, asking them frequent questions and engaging them with games and conversation. Because those with ADHD have the most trouble concentrating when they are bored, I keep these students stimulated by changing topics frequently and encouraging participation.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I have always enjoyed math and in my tutoring sessions I show students the ways in which Algebra is relevant to everyday life. I help students to better understand the material by explaining it in clear, simple terms. I use visual representations and analogous examples using words and descriptions in order to make the material less abstract. I show students how to be neat and orderly when working out their problems so as to cut back on careless errors. During our tutoring sessions, I will assist students with their homework and help them to better learn the concepts using games, exercises, and mini-lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutored elementary school students for over three years. What I have found to be the most successful strategy when tutoring young children is to incorporate games into every lesson because games help to make the learning process more fun and provide a good chance for the student to apply his or her knowledge. For example, we might play Pictionary, Charades or Plant/Animal/Mineral to learn vocabulary and figures of speech (noun/adjective/verb). I also use visual representations of abstract concepts to make the information easier for the student to grasp. When teaching multiplication, for example, I have the students draw out shapes to represent the numbers that are being multiplied. I like to integrate several games and mini-lessons into each tutoring session so that the student maintains attention and focus.

English

English

I am a professional copywriter with ample experience teaching and tutoring English, including teaching high-school AP English and guiding numerous students through college admissions essays and research papers. I have guided students of all ages in the ins and outs of writing composition, grammar, and literary analysis. Additionally, I have helped students with dyslexia and other learning disabilities to master writing using tools such as templates and color-coding. English has always been my favorite subject, and my enthusiasm for the subject matter carries over into my tutoring sessions.

I have successfully helped these students to improve upon their speaking, reading and writing skills by engaging them in conversation, providing visual representations of abstract concepts and encouraging active participation in the learning process.
Film

Film

I received my BA from the University of Southern California film school. There I took classes on screenwriting, critical studies and hands-on film making. I studied film theorists such as Gilles Deleuze, David Bordwell and Laura Mulvey and applied these concepts to analytical essays. When tutoring students in film I draw upon my extensive knowledge of the material and my passion for the subject matter to help students succeed in these areas.
ISEE

ISEE

I have extensive experience helping students prepare for the ISEE exam and have worked for several high-end tutoring companies including Davidson Tutoring and Hayutin & Associates. These companies specialized in ISEE and test prep tutoring, even developing their own curriculum. Thus, I am well-versed in all the best tools for helping students ace the ISEE, combining content mastery with test-taking strategies. I also help students to feel more relaxed about the test and play to their strengths.
Literature

Literature

As someone who has been an avid reader my whole life, my enthusiasm for the subject matter carries over into my tutoring sessions. I demonstrate to students how literature classes can actually be fascinating if they approach the material with an open mind and a positive attitude. In my tutoring sessions I teach students how to gain a better understanding of the material using such critical reading strategies as previewing, contextualizing, questioning, reflecting, summarizing and evaluating.
Philosophy

Philosophy

I have taken many college-level Philosophy courses including Philosophy of Critical Reasoning, Metaphysics and Epistemology, Philosophy of Business Ethics and The Philosophy of Death and Free Will and excelled in all of them. My enthusiasm for the subject matter shows in my tutoring sessions and I always stress the relevance philosophy has to current events and how we conduct our lives.
Proofreading

Proofreading

As a professional copywriter with an MFA in Writing and a minor in English, I have ample experience in writing and proofreading. Having worked on the publishing staff of a literary press, I am a meticulous editor. I also have 10+ years of experience teaching and tutoring English and know all the ins and outs of grammar as well as how to write clearly and effectively.
Reading

Reading

Not only do I help to improve reading comprehension, but I bring in unique reading selections tailored to each student's personality that promise to engage and intrigue. I believe that books have the power to teach valuable life lessons that can't be found in a traditional classroom setting, while still being enjoyable and entertaining!
Social Studies

Social Studies

Social Studies has always been a subject I have excelled at, from American History AP to college level Political Science. I have extensive experience tutoring students in this subject and use my enthusiasm for the material to make these sessions enjoyable and beneficial. I stress the importance of keeping informed on politics and often begin my sessions by discussing current events. For younger students taking history classes, I integrate fun activities into our sessions such as having the student write a made-up history on a topic of his or her choice. In many social studies classes students are tested on their memorization of the material, so I help my students improve their study skills by teaching them mnemonic devices, effective note-taking strategies, color-coding and how to recognize and highlight important facts.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I have tutored for three years both for private families as well as for a private tutoring company. The majority of my students, particularly the younger ones, struggle with study skills. With multiple students I have helped to raise their grades from Fs to Bs or higher by teaching them mnemonic devices, visualization (drawing pictures to accompany vocabulary definitions), organization (color-coding different categories in their notes and labeling difficult concepts with the page numbers from the text) and highlighting of important facts. I teach them how to make large blocks of text more digestible by summarizing what they have just read after each chapter or section. Additionally, I teach students strategies to maintain their focus and avoid fatigue by taking a ten-minute break after every hour of homework.
Writing

Writing

As a professional copywriter with an MFA in writing and 10+ years of experience teaching writing composition to students of all ages, my expertise is quite broad, including—but not limited to—English essays, short stories, research papers, college admissions essays, and cover letters. I am here to break down the process, showing students that writing doesn't have to be a scary, arduous task; it can actually be fun!
