Bio

I love empowering students in all things English! My greatest passion is storytelling, whether it is helping you analyze a piece of literature or strengthen your own creative writing. However, I also enjoy fortifying students’ essay skills, proofreading, and ESL/EFL abilities. If you love English or dread it, my goal is to help you discover your strengths and improve your weaknesses so that you can become independent of a tutor altogether!

I center classes around your goals and seek to make emotionally-engaging sessions that connect with your interests, if possible. We learn best when we discover the answers for ourselves rather than memorizing facts. That is why I run conversational tutoring sessions, asking you questions and encouraging you to do the same with me! Dialoguing through a poem, a word’s pronunciation, etc. lets you build the muscle you need to succeed in any aspect of English while still having professional guidance to ensure you are on track.

I graduated magna cum laude from Hillsdale College with a double major in English and Spanish. I understand the importance of proper writing and punctuation as I transcribed for the Winston Churchill Official Biography sanctioned by the British Parliament. I was then awarded the prestigious Fulbright grant to work as a university TA in Colombia (South America), where I helped ESL/EFL students in the classroom and through tutoring. That Colombian university, Universidad Católica de Oriente, then hired me as a professor. I also privately tutored students and professionals. After four years, I returned to the U.S. where I continued to tutor. Since 2017, I have also worked as a songwriter. Although my current writing endeavors center around music, I have a background in fiction, especially fantasy, and love empowering other writers.

English

English

I double-majored in English and Spanish at Hillsdale College - which was tied with Princeton for third most academically rigorous institution (according to the Princeton Review at that time). Writing, reading, literary analysis, and research were at the center of my studies. I then became a language professor and tutor, helping students improve their reading comprehension, analysis skills, proofreading abilities, as well as formal and informal writing.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

As a professor and tutor, I have helped students and professionals read, write, listen, and speak in English. I teach beginners and advanced students, and many of my university students needed to score a B1 (intermediate level) on APTIS or C1 (native level) on IELTS to get their degree. I have taught doctors, marketers, engineers, and other professionals who use English in their workplace.
Literature

Literature

I double-majored in English and Spanish at Hillsdale College - which was tied with Princeton for third most academically rigorous institution (according to the Princeton Review at that time). Literary analysis was at the core of my English studies, and I continue to critically read literature on my own and with peers in my free time. As a former ESL/EFL professor, I incorporated elements of close reading into my classes to help students better understand artistic forms of writing.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I transcribed and proofread for Winston S. Churchill, the Official Biography, sanctioned by the British Parliament. I also edited the office notes that accompanied archived mail for the president of Hillsdale College. If I made a mistake, it was possible that mail would be lost forever - so I understand the importance of a perfect submission! I attended Hillsdale College when it was tied with Princeton for third most academically rigorous institution (according to the Princeton Review), and there, I wrote and proofread many papers as well as edited peers' creative writing.
Songwriting

Songwriting

Since 2017, I have worked as a songwriter. People describe my music as deeply stirring, or as one person said, "Hannah Carroll paints things in her heart so well that it starts up the things in mine. ” I have composed since age 12 and am an alumna of Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity. I have edited peers' creative writing and lyrics, finding ways to increase the songs' clarity and musical compatibility. However, what is most important to me is that a song's message rings true and touches the heart of the listener.
Writing

Writing

I attended Hillsdale College when it was tied with Princeton for third most academically rigorous institution (according to the Princeton Review), and there, I wrote and edited many papers. I became a language professor, teaching formal and informal writing styles as well as giving lots of feedback to my students to help them improve. I also have a background in creative writing (especially fantasy), and have edited peers' work. Since 2017, I have worked as a songwriter as well.

Knowledgeable, Kind, Patient, and Thought Provoking!

Hannah is an excellent teacher, and I look forward to our weekly sessions. We have been looking at different writing pieces for my job, but we are also working on various writing styles to broaden my skills. She is supportive and kind but also allows me to think for myself. Before working with Hannah, I felt embarrassed about my lack of knowledge and improper use of grammar and punctuation; however, her teaching style is free of judgment or shame. I highly recommend Hannah to anyone who wants to improve their writing or feel more confident about their creative self-expression. I can already see an improvement and more freedom in my writing!

Thank you so much, Kelcy! I love seeing what you bring to the table, and it is truly a joy to work on your writing together!

The best writing tutor I have ever worked with

I am so grateful that I found Hannah to help me clarify my ideas and strengthen my writing for my master's thesis. As a teacher, Hannah is kind, patient, a wonderful listener, and a clear communicator. She has extensive experience not only in teaching literature as a professor, but also in working as a professional creative writer herself. I spoke with a wide range of tutors before I chose to work with Hannah. She is by far the most knowledgeable, positive, communicative, and caring tutor with a love for writing that shines through the way she teaches concepts. I would strongly recommend Hannah if you are seeking a tutor with the perfect balance of subject knowledge and kindness as a person.
