Hello! I am an experienced elementary teacher who has been tutoring in phonics, reading, and math in one-on-one and small-group settings for over 10 years. I have 18 years of classroom teaching experience in 3rd and 4th grade, and 3 years of experience as an Academic Intervention teacher, working with small groups of Kinder-5th grade students in targeted reading and math skills. I find joy in tutoring. Helping each student's confidence and academic abilities grow is rewarding. I have a teaching degree from the University of Houston and hold teaching certificates in: Early Childhood - Grade 4, Grades 4-8 ELA/Reading, and Early Childhood - Grade 4 ESL. In April of 2024, I completed a 30-hour training in the dyslexia intervention program Reading By Design, and I obtained a certificate to implement the program. I have also been trained in the Reading Horizons Phonics program and have completed the Texas Reading Academy which is based on the current Science of Reading research.
I have a passion for building skills in growing readers, and I implement a phonics-based approach to improve decoding, fluency, comprehension, and spelling. I believe in determining student strengths and areas to grow and then designing lessons to meet exact needs so the most growth may be achieved. I follow a sequential phonics scope so that skills may be best acquired. I also love building skills in young mathematicians! I implement a concrete-pictorial-abstract math model so students better understand concepts as they build math skills. Through scaffolded instruction, continuous feedback, and guided and independent practice, I find my students' confidence and abilities grow. The age range of most of my clients is 5-12, but I am open to building foundational phonics, reading or math skills with any age learner.
