Hi, I'm Carlos! I am a physician licensed in Costa Rica, with a Doctor of Medicine and Surgery degree from UCIMED and a B.S. in Biology, earned cum laude at the University of North Texas. I tutor microbiology, anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and biology. My medical training and biomedical research experience help me connect these subjects to clinical examples: how a disease disrupts normal physiology, why a medication works, and how its mechanism explains its adverse effects. I can explain concepts in English or Spanish.

Since November 2025, I have provided one-on-one online tutoring to university-level, nursing school, medical school, and nurse practitioner-level students and adult learners, including pre-pharmacy and other health science students.
I have worked with students preparing for weekly exams, returning to school, and trying to recover after disappointing test results. Students I have tutored have improved their exam scores and course grades and passed challenging classes. I take time to understand each student's starting point, course expectations, and difficulties so our sessions focus on the material and skills they need most.

Before a session, I ask for lecture slides, study guides, and exam objectives so I can prepare around the student's actual course. During lessons, I break mechanisms into manageable steps using diagrams, flowcharts, and clinical scenarios. We then use active recall, teach-back, and practice questions to check understanding. I ask students to explain their reasoning and work through why an answer is correct and why the alternatives are wrong.
If an explanation does not click, I change the example or approach. Students can ask questions without embarrassment, and I balance patient explanation with honest feedback. My goal is for you to leave each session able to explain the material in your own words and apply it independently.

Approved Subjects

Anatomy

Anatomy

I tutored anatomy for 2 semesters during medical school at UCIMED in Costa Rica, where I earned my medical degree. I also took graduate courses when taking electives as I was obtaining my biology degree at the University of North Texas. My anatomical training included neuroanatomy and clinical rotations that connected human body structures with physical examination findings and their normal physiology. I help students understand spatial relationships, identify structures on diagrams and course images, and connect anatomy with function. My sessions use guided labeling, visual explanations, and active-recall questions to prepare students for lecture exams and lab practical quizzes and exams.
Biochemistry

Biochemistry

I earned a B.S. in Biology, cum laude, from the University of North Texas and continued studying biochemistry during my medical education in Costa Rica. My tutoring experience includes pre-pharmacy students who passed their biochemistry and a pre-medical student whom I currently support in the subject- many at universities with full 2-semester courses in the subject. I explain protein structure, enzyme activity, hemoglobin function, and metabolic pathways by connecting molecular mechanisms with physiological consequences. My sessions combine diagrams, practice problems, and explanations of answer choices to help students understand and apply biochemical concepts.
Microbiology

Microbiology

I hold a medical degree from UCIMED in Costa Rica and a B.S. in Biology, earned cum laude, from the University of North Texas. My medical training and microbiology tutoring experience help me connect microorganisms, immune responses, and mechanisms of disease. I help students distinguish commonly confused organisms and understand how their characteristics relate to transmission, symptoms, and treatment. My sessions use clear explanations, comparison tables, and practice questions to build understanding and strengthen recall.
Neuroscience

Neuroscience

I completed neuroanatomy coursework while earning my medical degree at UCIMED in Costa Rica. During medical school, I tutored anatomy for two semesters, including neuroscience, helping students understand central and peripheral nervous system anatomical structures and their physiology. I also applied my neuroanatomy and neurophysiology knowledge during two years of working in neurology and brain injury clinical research at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. My teaching connects nervous system structure with function and clinical findings, using visual explanations, clinical examples, and active-recall questions to strengthen understanding.
Nursing

Nursing

I earned my medical degree at UCIMED in Costa Rica and a Bachelor of Science in Biology, cum laude, from the University of North Texas. My clinical training included internal medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry, obstetrics and gynecology, and surgery. I tutor nursing and nurse practitioner students in pathophysiology, connecting disease mechanisms with clinical findings and related pharmacology. I use structured explanations, clinical examples, and active-recall questions to strengthen understanding and prepare students for course exams.
Pharmacology

Pharmacology

I currently tutor graduate-level pharmacology, helping students connect drug mechanisms with therapeutic effects, adverse reactions, and drug interactions. I earned my medical degree at UCIMED in Costa Rica, where my pharmacology education in basic pharmacology (2 semesters) and clinical pharmacology (1 semester) was reinforced through clinical rotations in internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, and psychiatry. I explain how drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination influence medication effects, and I connect these principles to clinical examples. My pharmacology sessions use comparisons between drug classes, active recall, and practice questions to help premed, pre-nursing, nursing, medical, and pre-pharmacy school students distinguish similar medications and prepare for their course exams.
Physiology

Physiology

I hold a medical degree from UCIMED in Costa Rica and a B.S. in Biology, earned cum laude, from the University of North Texas. My medical training and pathophysiology tutoring experience help me connect normal organ function with the mechanisms of disease. I explain cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, endocrine, and nervous system physiology using clear examples, emphasizing homeostasis and how organ systems work together. My sessions combine step-by-step explanations, interpretation of graphs, and active-recall questions to strengthen understanding and exam preparation.
