My goal as a certified teacher and tutor with over 5 years of experience is to help students build strong academic foundations early, especially during the critical learning years from 1st through 3rd grade. As a classroom teacher, I have developed effective strategies that help students not only understand the material but also perform at higher levels on assessments, including reaching Meets and Masters performance levels on the STAAR. By introducing these strategies early, students learn how to approach reading and math with confidence and clear problem-solving methods.

Students in 2nd grade especially benefit from this early preparation, because the transition from 2nd to 3rd grade is one of the biggest academic leaps in elementary school. Expectations increase significantly in both reading comprehension and math problem solving. My tutoring focuses on helping students strengthen these core skills ahead of time so they enter 3rd grade prepared, confident, and ready to succeed.

Through structured lessons, guided practice, and targeted skill-building, I help students develop the thinking strategies they need to understand what they read, solve problems effectively, and explain their reasoning. My goal is not just to help students complete assignments, but to give them the tools and confidence they need to succeed both in the classroom and on future assessments.

Approved Subjects

Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I currently working with K-6th graders at an elementary school while attending Texas A&M Commerce for EC-6th with special education. I help struggling readers build a foundation in phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, and comprehension. I also prepare advance students to meet higher standards. During acceleration period, I also assist with the other core subjects.
Reading

Reading

I always start with the basics. It is very important for students to master their basics when it comes to everything, especially in becoming effective readers! After mastering the basics and establishing a solid foundation, building blocks will be easier to obtain! I teach students how to read, how to comprehend what is being read, and how to read fluently. As I am teaching these skills, I focus on building their vocabulary to help strengthen those skills. I've learned that students struggle with certain letter sounds. So, I always start with pronouncing single letter sounds. I move on to them understanding 2 & 3 letter blends and digraphs. They will learn the importance of short vs. long vowels (a e i o u), tricky y, silent letters, prefixes/suffixes, etc.

Great communication

Lisa made my reluctant child feel comfortable during first session. He said, “mom that wasn’t so bad.” She established a comfort level with him on first session.

Thoughtful and Professional Tutor

My daughter has just completed her second reading tutor session with Lisa. My daughter is 7 yoa and in 2nd grade. Lisa scheduled a phone call with me before my daughter started tutoring. Lisa asked wonderful questions about my daughter's struggles and my goals for her tutoring. From there Lisa came prepared for the tutoring sessions with great lesson plans and overall plan to achieve goals. Lisa is very personable, kind, patient and engaging for my daughter. We look forward to continue our tutoring sessions with Lisa. I highly recommend Lisa for tutoring.

Great teacher!

We’ve only had 2 sessions and I can see a difference in my daughter’s reading already. She’s patient and works really well with my daughter.
