I've spent nearly 20 years helping people find their voice—as a tutor and a certified Project-Based Learning classroom teacher, trainer, and instructional coach through New Tech Network. I hold an M.Ed. in Secondary Education and a B.A. in English (Magna Cum Laude, Honors College) with a concentration in Creative Writing, along with a Texas ELAR 8–12 certification.

ACT English is really a grammar and rhetoric test disguised as an editing exercise—it rewards students who know the rules cold and can apply them quickly. I've taught the underlying grammar and usage rules for years as patterns students can recognize on sight. Students leave faster at spotting errors and more confident trusting their own ear.
ACT Reading

ACT Reading

ACT Reading is a speed and stamina challenge—four passages, limited time, and comprehension the pressure clock. I teach students to identify the main idea and argument of a passage quickly, then scan for specific details, rather than reading every line with equal weight. Students leave with a faster, more reliable process that doesn't fall apart under the clock.

I am a self-taught home cook who has spent years building a personal recipe collection organized by life stage, including a set of essential dishes I consider must-know for teenagers, twenty-somethings, and thirty-somethings living independently. My repertoire spans breakfast, mains, sides, sauces and vinaigrettes, charcuterie, and even camping/backpacking meals for the outdoors. I enjoy teaching practical, everyday skills that build real confidence without requiring formal training.

My undergraduate degree concentrated in Creative Writing with a focus in poetry, and my coursework required me to study and produce work in fiction and nonfiction as well. I've teach creative writing as an English teacher, building scaffolded units that guide students from generating ideas to developing genuine craft. I work with students exploring any form of creative expression, whether they are just beginning or already writing independently.

I taught a UT OnRamps dual-enrollment Rhetoric course, which framed written argument as the foundational discipline behind all debate—deliberately built on the same principles of claim, evidence, and reasoning that spoken debate demands. My Texas ELAR 8-12 certification and nearly two decades in the classroom gave me a strong grounding in formal argumentation across grade levels. I structure debate instruction around building a case, anticipating opposition, and defending a position with precision.

I was recognized as the top art student in my classes from childhood through high school, developing a strong foundation in classical drawing before advancing into sculpture, where drawing became a tool for studying more complex three-dimensional work. During graduate school, a painting I submitted for a visual communications course so impressed my professor that he asked to keep it. My training begins with the elements and principles of art: line, shape, value, form; balance, rhythm, unity, et al.

I've been studying language and communications since 2001. That's 20+ years of studying, teaching and tutoring English. In my English courses, I emphasize oral communications, reading, writing, and research. I work with students who are behind, on level, and advanced alike. I hold an M.Ed. in Secondary Education and taught essay writing across every level of high school English, including AP and dual-enrollment coursework, for nearly two decades. My method moves through layers, starting with rhetorical purpose and audience, then narrowing into structure, paragraphing, and sentence-level revision. I also served as an Instructional Coach, training other teachers on how to teach the writing process effectively, which sharpened my own approach considerably.

I studied fiction writing formally as part of my Creative Writing concentration in undergrad, and I have written fiction of my own, including longer projects I continue to develop. I've taught fiction units within my English courses, covering character development, plot structure, pacing, and voice. My focus is helping a student find the story only they can tell.

I was perpetually underweight, but in the last 4 years, I've put on 50+ pounds of muscle with no crazy supplements, and am finally healthy and resilient. I've built my own fitness from the ground up through years of self-directed training, balancing nutrition, strength work, cardio, and yoga in roughly equal measure each week. I'm not a certified personal trainer, but I bring firsthand experience with what actually works—consistency, variety, and sustainable habits rather than specializing in one mode of fitness. I'm especially glad to help anyone looking to build a well-rounded, balanced fitness routine rather than chase one narrow goal.

Adults learn best through relevance, autonomy, and building on existing experience, not rote repetition. My core academic strength is Reasoning Through Language Arts, backed by nearly two decades of teaching English, and I'm also equipped to support the Science, Social Studies, and Mathematical Reasoning sections. Grammar is the nuts and bolts of language. Teaching it in my English classes, I became a bit of a specialist in basic grammatical forms necessary for high school reading and comprehension. The more you master the rules of grammar, the more you understand WHY communication works the way it does, and the better your reading and writing becomes.

I took the GRE myself for graduate school, so I understand the test from a student's perspective, not just a teacher's. My strength is verbal reasoning and analytical writing, backed by nearly 20 years of teaching reading and writing. I focus on building real skill first, so test strategy actually has something to work with.
High School Placement Test

High School Placement Test

My Texas ELAR 8-12 certification and nearly two decades teaching high school English directly cover the verbal, reading, and language sections of the HSPT, including grammar, vocabulary, analogies, and comprehension. I have also completed self-directed coursework in mathematics through Duolingo Math covering arithmetic through pre-algebra, matching the level tested on the HSPT's quantitative and math sections. I can support a student across the full test, with particular depth on the English-language portions.

I completed an introductory linguistics course as part of my B.A. in English, covering the foundations of phonetics, morphology, and syntax. I have applied that foundation for nearly two decades while teaching grammar and language structure to high school students. I minored in philosophy at UNT. I've taken coursework in Religion, Ancient Philosophy, Environmental Ethics, Epistemology, and Metaphysics. Philosophy is one of my favorite subjects, and use it often in self-reflection, personal guidance and decision-making. It teaches not what to think, but how to think--and it all begins with wonder!

I built solid math competency through self-directed study covering arithmetic through pre-algebra. I understand the material well enough to explain it clearly and walk a student through problems step by step. I teach reading as an active skill—noticing structure, tracking argument, and reading closely. I work with students at every level, including those significantly behind grade level, and know how to rebuild both skill and confidence. Students leave reading more attentively and with more to say about what they've found.

SAT Reading

SAT Reading isn't really about finding the right answer—it's about finding the BEST answer among several that all look correct, which is a subtler and more frustrating skill to learn. I know that frustration firsthand from taking the test myself, and I've since spent years teaching students how to reverse-engineer what the test writers are actually asking. My focus is teaching students to read the trap, not just the passage, so the "best answer" starts to feel obvious instead of arbitrary.
SAT Writing

SAT Writing

SAT Writing has a specific trap: it often writes grammatically correct sentences that sound wrong, so a strong intuitive ear can actually work against a student here. I teach students to know the rule behind the sentence, not just trust what sounds right, which is the opposite instinct ACT English rewards. This distinction matters — students who over-rely on instinct often underperform on this section until they learn to check their ear against the rule.

I taught study skills to graduate-level peers during my own master's program, after building a personal study system in college from a self-directed study guide that I still draw on today. Since 2005, I've applied that system while tutoring and teaching high school students and adults, covering note-taking, textbook reading, time management, and test preparation. My approach treats study skills as a personal system to be developed, not a generic checklist to follow.

Vocabulary development is a core building block of the English curriculum, including Latin and Greek root instruction. bring this into test prep contexts, helping students build the vocabulary base needed for the SAT, ACT, and GRE. I teach words in context and by root, not memorized lists. With this skillset, you'll be able to guess a new word's meaning without looking it up.

I teach writing in layers—starting with the rhetorical foundation of voice, purpose, and audience, then moving into word choice, sentence-level grammar and syntax, and finally paragraph and essay structure. When teaching writing from scratch, I build from the inside out; when reviewing a finished draft, I give feedback from the outside in, tightening structure before refining the sentence. Students leave understanding not just what to fix, but why it matters at every level of the page.
