Vision: Illumination

I envision a world lit by the knowledge of the mind, guided equally by rationality and intuition, where understanding, respect, and mindfulness give direction to the progress of society. Knowledge is power, and it is shared.

Mission:
Civilization is built upon the pillars of scholarship, leadership, and service. With a shared understanding of the world, we may each develop in ways that are best for all life.

As a tutor I will assist in learning by the most effective and efficient means possible, namely experience, for it is the best teacher.

First we’ll target the problem areas. The darkness of ignorance doesn’t allow you to see what’s hiding in the recesses of your intellectual development. If you’re missing a piece of knowledge from a greater body of knowledge, how would you know? It’s in the shadows.

So let’s light it up. We’ll typically start with a diagnostic test of my own creation. Then we’ll target problem areas with the best learning technique available—direct experience. This is where tutoring gets fun! If it’s literature, we will live the text. If it’s cooking, we’ll dine like kings. If you need help in grammar, vocabulary, writing or any other subject, I’ll do my best to make the content real and tangible for all my students so that they retain long-term knowledge.

Guiding Principles:
Efficient learning develops from efficient study.
Efficient study forms new habits.
New habits arise from new practices.
Experiential learning is personal for the student and commits lessons to long-term memory.

By building new ways to practice, you will develop new and beneficial study habits that result in efficient learning techniques that ultimately result in a greater understanding of the subject area. When efficiency combines with interdisciplinary study, you’ll likely see an improvement in other subject areas as well.

Cooking

Cooking

Cooking is a practical skill that brings art and science together as the first line of healing for the mind, body, and spirit. Together, we’ll start at the market, learning to pick out the freshest foods. Depending on your level of skill, desired nutrition, and personal taste, we’ll practice food preparation, knife skills, and sensory acuity. We’ll then move on to cooking with water (stewing, boiling, poaching or simmering to name a few), then dry cooking (includes grilling, toasting, roasting, broiling, and baking), and finally frying (if desired). Once you’ve gained enough experience as a cook, I can help you write your own recipes, acting as coach and critic. I can also help find recipes to supplement dietary allergies (such as gluten-intolerance). The art of cooking is a means of expression, and the first form of healing that will deliver high energy, mental flexibility, and spiritual balance.
Drawing

Drawing

The basics of art lie in the visual elements and the principles of design. I will administer your progression through your use of line, color, texture, shape, form, value, and size, then analyze your use of balance, scale, rhythm, emphasis, and unity. Once these basic building blocks are established, the rest of the artistic game is found in play. Play is practice and experimentation, and with practice you will improve. I began drawing at a very young age. In elementary school, I drew cartoons. In middle school I advanced to still life drawings and portraits. When I arrived in high school, I found a passion in sculpture, where drawing became more than just an end in itself, but was also used as a study for a larger, more complex body of art. I can tutor you in dry or liquid media, and even sculpture since its not listed a listed category on WyzAnt
General Computer

General Computer

Having been blessed to be born of the Millennial Generation, I have a natural understanding of computers. If you or someone you know needs general computer knowledge, I can assist with basic operation, file management, system maintenance and security, email, listservs, web skills, databases, searching, and information integrity. I am also proficient with word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation programs, and have experience with Windows and Mac operating systems.
Philosophy

Philosophy

I minored in philosophy at UNT. I've taken coursework in Religion, Ancient Philosophy, Environmental Ethics, Epistemology, and Metaphysics. Philosophy is one of my favorite subjects, and use it often in self-reflection and personal guidance. It teaches not what to think, but how to think. And it all begins with wonder!
Study Skills

Study Skills

Good study skills lay the foundation for learning. I can help with organization, time management, effective listening, note taking, text book reading comprehension, test anxiety, memorization, test taking strategies, as well as the research process. I can also identify your learning style to find the best means of study that is unique to your personality. My approach to study is one that cultivates an intimate relationship with the knowledge at hand. The goal is to understand the subject so well that it actually develops into a personal significance for the student. This occurs not through rote memorization, but through active learning in a way that is conducive to your personality. This ensures that the knowledge is long-term. Until the information can be ingrained into the psyche in a unique way, it will remain as arbitrary facts and figures, whereas a life of study makes the knowledge uniquely one's own.
