When I work one-to-one with someone, whether it be another adult or a student, I like to break down problems into its smallest parts and also retrace steps to finding mistakes in the work or the problem itself. Textbooks or worksheets can have typos!
During my two semesters of Student Observations and one semester of Student Teaching, I've been fortunate to have the opportunity to work one-to-one with many students, during the school day as well as for brief moments afterschool.
