Hi, I'm Scott! I'm a bass trombonist and composer/arranger from the NYC metropolitan area, currently a majority of the way through earning my bachelor's degree in Jazz Performance at Texas Tech University after a yearslong break from college. Prior to TTU, I studied music at Rutgers University, Cumberland University, and privately with a variety of teachers. At Cumberland I won both of the school's first two annual instrumental competitions, playing jazz the first year and classical the second, and during the aforementioned break in my traditional education, I worked and performed both on my own and alongside industry professionals around NYC and Nashville, including current jazz and commercial industry leaders as well as alumni of such storied bands as Buddy Rich, Maynard Ferguson, Woody Herman, and The Temptations. My playing resume has earned me an audition at a major regional orchestra. I am also an active composer and arranger, and some of my jazz arrangements are still in some professional NJ-based big bands' books to this day.
As a playing tutor, I can teach any common brass instrument as well as voice and the fundamentals and theory of jazz improvisation on any instrument; I put a strong emphasis on general musical understanding to help my students succeed in transcending the idiosyncrasies of their chosen instrument to become well-rounded and effective musicians with a deep appreciation for their craft. I can also teach aural skills ("sight-singing" and ear training) and the Western traditions of music theory to students of about any skill level, and I've had numerous peers at the collegiate level attribute success in theory classes to my tutoring after they had been in danger of failing. My past students have ranged in age from 11 well into adulthood and in skill from complete beginners to industry professionals with multiple degrees above my own. I try to take as versatile approach as I can to figure out the best individualized ways to help my students learn with great joy and effectiveness.

Composition (Music)

Composition (Music)

My jazz arrangements and original compositions are played by multiple professional big bands in New Jersey. In between school obligations I put together a herculean reduction for soloist+piano of a 17 minute long portion of a famous orchestral ballet and successfully premiered it in its entirety with an accompanist in the span of a single semester. I've performed last-minute reorchestration work for a successful artist debut and a world premiere by an established artist. I've given an official lecture on compositional techniques in a collegiate setting at Texas Tech University.
Ear Training

Ear Training

I have over 19 years of training and experience accurately identifying and formally notating melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic material. I've enabled students to pass collegiate ear training courses they had initially struggled with. I've been asked by collegiate music professors for my advice in coaching students with unique aural challenges in classes and ensembles. I've directly assisted with major breakthroughs made by multiple vocalists who had previously been written off by many as pitch deaf.
Sight Singing

Sight Singing

In addition to my trombone specialty, I have also worked professionally as a section and solo tenor vocalist in jobs that required frequent short-notice sight reading. On one such job I was hired by an accomplished church choir as a Tenor 1 section leader for several months, during which time I led my section in preparing and performing John Rutter's Gloria as well as a world premiere of a completely original cantata. I've been professionally trained as a vocalist by numerous accomplished teachers and received high marks on sight singing tests and courses throughout my high school and college career. I was promoted to section leader in a professional big band due in significant part to my ability to accurately sight sing new charts in the process of rehearsing them.
Trombone

Trombone

I have over 12 years of professional trombone experience in primarily classical, jazz, and commercial music as a soloist, bandleader, and section player across several of the most active and important cities for the American music industry. I've played bass trombone for world premieres by multiple renowned composers. My resume is of a caliber that has earned me an audition with a major regional orchestra.
