I'm Dianne, a professional linguist (US-born and educated abroad). I love giving my clients what they really need with my results-based tutoring services. FYI I'm selective about my students, so let's make sure we're a good fit before working with each other.

I'm more than just a language tutor. With over 25 years of teaching experience, I've learned how to diagnose language issues like a doctor. I've been able to help "Mission Impossible" cases with students who have severe issues with their speaking. I teach with only the most effective resources to teach grammar with games, comparison exercises, and music, in both English and Spanish.

A few examples of students I've helped include the following:

1) ESL/TESOL: Grammar, Speaking, Listening, and Accent Reduction. This is my strongest area (25+ years of experience) as I'm a US native teacher who's taught in three different countries. ACCENT REDUCTION/PRONUNCIATION/SPEECH THERAPY are my specialty areas.

2) SPANISH: I understand the needs of English speakers who study Spanish since I learned that way myself. My focus is on ORAL and WRITTEN COMMUNICATION starting in our first lesson.

3) Proofreading: A college professor's dream was to publish her academic paper. She was approved for a European publication in 2022.

4) Writing students experience much success with my guidance. They get homework between classes, do live editing with me, and get solid feedback and exercises to help combat their weaknesses which helps strengthen their writing skills.

Most importantly, I help my students recognize what's going on with their own language, be it in spoken or written form. My niche populations are students who speak romantic languages (Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Italian), as I've lived in Latin America for over two decades.

As a tutor, I am kind, intuitive, and empathetic. My 5-star reviews tell the story.

Public Speaking

I have a B.S. degree from Utah State University plus 30 years of leadership in international business. My professional experience has included the following: corporate presentation trainer for CEOs and executives in the US and Latin America, new airline reservation agent employee trainer, and private English student job interview training, My newest and very successful endeavor is a YouTube channel that interviews Americans, Canadians and other Spanish speakers in both English and Spanish about their lives as foreigners in another country. My goal is to prepare you with the tools you'll need to be successful when it comes to public speaking engagements and job interviews to put your best foot forward. We'll conduct mock job interviews and presentations until you acquire enough confidence to achieve your goal, whatever that may be.

Corporate Training

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

This is my top subject matter! My teaching experience: I started out teaching English in Buenos Aires, Argentina where I lived for almost 18 years. I taught all kinds of international populations from around the world, such as Spanish and Portuguese speakers, French, other Europeans, Asians (Korean and Chinese) Ukrainians, and Middle Easterners, among others. Then I moved back to the US and continued teaching at the corporate level. Finally, 3+ years in Mexico. I know how to give a diagnosis on the English language learner and how to combat those "illnesses". Thus, I've become the "go-to" tutor for pronunciation, especially for Spanish, Portuguese, and Asian populations since those are the students I've taught most over the years. Additional experience: I've owned a translation company and have been a translator, editor, proofreader, and copyeditor.
Grammar,

Grammar

I can help you diagnosis what's going on with your grammar and correct your "illnesses", combating them with special exercises and activities (even games sometimes) to help you remember when to use each tense, adjective, and much, much more. The problem isn't doing them in exercises, it's when you need to use them in real life! That's what I do best, so you'll be in great hands with me.
Proofreading,

Proofreading

My experience encompasses 25 years of reviewing texts that help students get into their residency programs, authors who have been published, law firms and global companies. My process includes proofreading the text on my own, then going online with my clients to re-read the text to make sure it conveys the exact message for the specific purpose it was intended for. I'm also a published author and writing tutor, thus your text will be in expert hands with me.

Spanish

Learn naturally with a bilingual gringa (American) who's lived almost half her life (21 years) in Latin America (Argentina and Mexico) and who has been a professional translator, language interpreter, and tour guide in Mexico. I'm not a native speaker of Spanish, but I'm pretty close since I've learned how to navigate life in Latin America starting from not knowing much at all to becoming fully fluent and conversational. I can teach anything from beginner Spanish to conversational levels, teach you verb conjugations, vocabulary, and good pronunciation in a way that you'll learn quickly and increase your love of the Spanish language and culture, just like I have. ¡Me encanta el idioma español!

How did you learn to read as a child? Most likely it was because you were read to by your family, caretakers, or teachers. It's no different now, and the way I teach is similar in many ways. I read to you and you repeat it, trying to imitate the pronunciation, intonation, and word patterns as best you can. We finish the reading passage and you tell me what you understood from what we read and identify the words you don't understand. In other words, you learn in a natural way, just like a child. You'll gain confidence, get more fluent in your reading, and get better. I'm an encouraging and caring tutor who'll make you look forward to our sessions and stay engaged.

Patience and Acknowledge Teacher

Dianne has the most understanding and patient teacher, I ever know. As an adult student, she gives good tips and the best methods to remember pronunciation and grammar. She also speaks Spanish, so she knows how both languages can relate. I strongly recommend Dianne.

Mina, 9 lessons with Dianne
Tutor responded:

Thank you so much for this feedback, Mina! I fully enjoy teaching you and seeing your English get better and better. Cheers to more improvement!

Excellent tutor!

My son really struggled with writing until he met Dianne. She has really helped him! He is confident and doesn’t struggle like he used to and I couldn’t be happier. My son loves to work with her! She’s very pleasant and very patient!

Daisy, 20 lessons with Dianne
Tutor responded:

Thank you so much for this feedback, Daisy. I'm so happy and honored to witness the budding of your son's potential. It's truly my pleasure to work with him.

Awesome tutor

Dianne is just amazing. She went above and beyond to help me edit and rewrite my UC personal insight questions. We are currently working together to better my pronunciation and get a higher score on my TOEFL test. We have been working together for about two months now and my speaking and writing, and everyone around me is seeing huge improvements! Thank you so much Dianne for being an awesome tutor!

Camilla, 21 lessons with Dianne
Tutor responded:

Thank you so much for this feedback, Camilla! We're a great team that works well together, that's for sure.

Great teacher with creative methods

Dianne is a fabulous teacher who will help you with your pronunciation (very peaky but very funny) so that you can be understood by anyone. The lessons can include fairly traditional moments such as grammar review but always with personal applications or interesting situations. Very very happy with my progress with her.

Alexandre, 25 lessons with Dianne
Tutor responded:

Thank you so much for this unexpected feedback, Alex! I really enjoy working with you and you're making great progress with your pronunciation, grammar, and fluency. Cheers to more future improvement!

Great teacher in both language and culture.

Dianne is a great teacher. I'm learning Spanish quicker than I expected. She's lived in Argentina and lives in Mexico so she's able to teach what people actually say. She's also great at explaining the culture and has greatly helped me communicate with people in Mexico even though we talk in English.

Dan, 40 lessons with Dianne
Tutor responded:

Thank you so much for this valuable feedback, Dan. I love tutoring a student who grasps the concepts more quickly as well as we can really get into how things are in Latin America. Cheers (Saludos) to your progress!

Great Tutor

It was great talking to her about a few grammar topics that helped strengthen my writing. She was able to use a project that I was working on to show me ways I can improve it. Highly recommend.
