Hello! I am a public school teacher, certified and highly qualified in Reading, Title 1 Remedial Reading, Language Arts, English, Speech, and Journalism. I also have a master's degree in Educational Leadership. I have taught in inner-city public schools for over 10 years at the middle school level. I have tutored students in grades 3-12 for over 20 years. This includes content-based English class sessions, novels, writing, and social science lessons. Sciences and Maths tutoring focuses on note-taking, student-reteach, and supplemental resources to enhance classroom learning.

As a tutor, I take a learning-based approach to helping students understand the content of their classes. The approach students take to learning is vastly more important than the content itself. Understanding their learning and productivity requirements, having transferrable strategies to learn any content, and focusing on effective study methods can increase a student's overall confidence and success in a short amount of time.

During sessions, students will learn note-taking skills, study skills, and how to use effective supplemental materials to reinforce the content in their classes. They will also learn study strategies that will give them an edge on quizzes, tests, essays, and overall retention of the subject matter.

I offer the following kinds of sessions:
direct content-based reinforcement on current assignments (homework, projects, novels, etc., that are currently being studied in class)
supplemental content-based instruction on standards or topics of choice (areas of struggle, areas of enhancement, topics the student wants to learn)

Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been tutoring K-6th grade students for 10 years. Additionally, I have subbed in suburban and city schools since 2009, working with students K-12 in general and special education. I work with students one on one to find the missing link that is overlooked in the classroom environment. I pinpoint the student's needs and use various approaches to help the student self-motivate, while sticking with the student's classroom curriculum and teacher strategies.
Special Needs

Special Needs

I have been working with special needs students for 2 years. I am employed with a self-contained cooperative that works with several suburbian school districts for students K-22yrs, that have various developmental disabilities. Our programs offer academics, vocational, personal/social skills, and daily living skills teaching to prepare students with diverse abilities for success in the outside world. We work with students on reading, math, science, and social studies in the academics. Vocational skills focus on job-related needs, such as shaking hands during an interview, following directions, completing tasks quickly and efficiently, and interacting with colleagues and supervisors. Personal/social skills works with students on proper ways to handle different situations in the adult world, interaction in public locations, and remembering proper etiquette for relating to others. Daily living skills focus on those things that people need during daily life, such as grocery shopping, laundry, paying bills (if able), and getting to and from work. I enjoy working with these students, as it opens my eyes to those things I take for granted and helps me to teach others how to give their best and live life to the fullest.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I have been teaching and tutoring Study Skills to students of all grade levels for 15 years. I work with students in fiction and nonfiction note-taking skills and retention methods. Most of my students are able to train their brains to internalize studying and raise their grades by 2 letter grades.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is essential in understanding a text and increasing reading comprehension. Younger students focus on Fry's 100 words for both visual memorization and understanding of the meaning. For older students, I offer word study and dictionary skills to help them use their immediate resources for themselves. In addition, word study (prefixes, suffixes, and root words) help to give students information to breakdown a word they do not know and understand the meaning, raising standardized test scores and increasing reading comprehension and enjoyment.

Creative teacher with the ability to pinpoint a childs strengths and weaknesses

Benae has identified the things my daughter needs to work on to make her a stronger learner and will be helping her throughout the summer. She is patient and is able to explain things in a way a child can understand and put it in context to everyday life. My child gets more out of her time with Benae than she does in her classroom many days. I highly recommend her skills and abilities.

Great tutor

Benae tutored my son in several high school subjects. She also worked with him on study skills and organizational skills. Benae was able to help my son increase his grades in the subjects in which he was tutored, but also his grades in other subjects improved using the techniques she taught him. My son's sessions were always productive and she was able to keep him motivated to improve. Benae was always very professional and any student with whom she works is very fortunate. I recommend her very highly.

Excitedly Pleased

Ms. Benae has a great spirit and magnetic personality. More important she has the ability to be spot on in diagnosing the needs of our son. As she prepared work, pre-assessment testing results came in from school, it totally matched the work she prepared. My son in true boy fashion wasn't excited after he realized he was expected to do "real" work, but in their next session he came around and we can see the positive results in his attitude, the way he thinks and approaches his assignments. Ms. Benae is great fit for our son and she communicates well with us her goals and plan of action. We are truly pleased.

Amazing!

Benae has been extremely helpful to my brother who was struggling with some math and writing skills. We didn’t consider a tutor until his senior year of high school and throughout the entire year we could see Jacob become more confident with his work. We wish we would have considered Benae at the start of his high school career. She’s great and really understanding!!!

Perfect tutor!

Benae recently tutored my six year old over the summer and was great! First off let me say she is ALWAYS on time! And communicating with her is so easy! She is very patient. My six year old liked that she made learning fun. She would have games, computer time, and stickers to reward her at the end of each lesson. She also gave me a ton of tips I could do with my daughter at home. I look forward to having her tutor her again next summer!

Aewesome Tutor

Ms. C is an amazing young tutor. My son was not to thrilled to be going to "school" in the summer. After the first session with Benae his attitude changed. He loves going and doing his homework. Beane is very gifted with children. She is always prepared with the proper paper and books. Her communication with my son and myself is great. Love her.
