With over 20 years of teaching students with reading difficulties, and I have yet to find a student whom I could not teach to read or help to improve their reading. I received a Master's degree in elementary and special education from Saginaw Valley State University in Michigan, and I am certified in Texas to teach elementary and middle school (4-6 Generalist) and special education, with an ESL supplemental certification.
As a special education teacher, I have always worked with students individually and in small groups. I meet students where they are and use a multi-sensory approach to help them to learn and generalize basic reading skills. I teach phonetic skills, sight words, and comprehension strategies. My instruction is data-based, so the students are taught the specific skills that they need. I also keep my instruction very engaging, focusing on the students' specific interests. I have experience working with students who have dyslexia, autism, intellectual disabilities, and ADHD.
My teaching experience includes middle school pre-vocational classes, remedial reading, inclusion, life skills, elementary and middle school dyslexia intervention, behavior intervention, and social skills instruction. I have taught full time in both Michigan and Texas. Currently, I am working as a dyslexia teacher and special education lead in Texas.
