My name is David. I have over twenty years’ experience teaching Latin, Italian, and English literature, language, and writing at the university level. I graduated summa cum laude in Classics and Italian with minors in History and Philosophy from the University of Texas and held a Fulbright Full Grant in Italy before earning my Ph.D. in Italian at Stanford University. I have taught at Yale, Stanford, and Notre Dame and I am currently working as a translator and writer located between Houston, Texas and Rome, Italy. I am easy to reach and have a flexible schedule. I am happy to tailor lessons to individual student needs.

I have several years’ experience teaching college-level writing in the humanities. I have worked with students in small groups and individually on improving their English writing skills and proofreading, editing, and fact-checking essays. I also have experience proofreading personal statements and other application materials for graduate and professional school applications.

I have taught English and world literature at the college level for two decades. I am currently teaching individual lessons on major authors of western literature, such as Homer, Vergil, Dante, Boccaccio, Petrarch, Chaucer, and Shakespeare, but also modern and contemporary authors commonly taught in schools.

I have years of experience bringing the Italian language to different levels of students and have advanced training in foreign language pedagogy, ACTFL proficiency testing, and I have a student-oriented approach to language learning.

I started tutoring Latin in college and have continued ever since. I enjoy seeing students gain a greater confidence with the language and, through Latin, with English as well.

For over 20 years I have taught English as a Second Language in Italy on a one-on-one basis to young adults and business professionals in person and online. I am up-to-date on current methodologies and I enjoy helping students gain confidence in speaking, reading, and writing.

Great tutor

David helped my niece learn how to write a better literary analysis on Romeo and Juliet. He was very patient, eloquent, and good at explaining the steps to a better result. His lessons were very interesting and offered new knowledge for my niece. Highly recommend!

Great First Lesson!

My son had his first lesson with David and it went very well. David was prepared, patient, and helpful in assisting my son with his English assignment. David’s comments were thoughtful and informative. My son will continue to have lessons with David.

Very knowledgeable and effective tutor

David was very helpful. My first session with him was to prepare for a test in a college course on Italian culture. David was the perfect choice. I will definitely schedule more sessions

Patient and super informative!

David was very thorough when letting me know what I needed to work on to improve my writing! He was also super patient when some explanations weren't as clear to me. Highly recommend if you're trying to improve your writing skills.

Best tutor!

From the very first session, I was impressed by David's depth of knowledge in the subject matter. He has a clear and concise way of explaining complex concepts, making even the most challenging topics seem manageable. What sets David apart is his dedication to his students' success. He took the time to understand my son's individual learning style and tailored his teaching approach accordingly. David was always punctual, reliable, and well-prepared for our lessons. He provided additional resources and practice materials to reinforce the lessons, which greatly contributed to my son's improvement. Moreover, he is patient and encouraging, creating a comfortable learning environment where the student felt free to ask questions and seek clarification. In summary, David is an outstanding tutor who possesses a deep knowledge of the subject matter, a passion for teaching, and a commitment to their students' success. I highly recommend David to anyone seeking a tutor who can make a real difference in their studying. Thank you, David, for your exceptional support and guidance!

Knowledgable, patient and encouraging

I am so grateful David was able to work with my son who has learning differences (dyslexia and processing). My son somehow registered for this difficult college class, Vikings Myths & Sagas. I am sure it sounded interesting at the time but there were so many analytical essays one after another and not much feedback from the professor. David assured me he could help our son and that he did. After the most recent assignment, I texted my son asking how things were going with his tutor and his response was, "David is amazing." With all of the tutors we have ever had throughout middle and high school, I don't think our son has ever said anything close. David is calm, patient and encouraging. I sat in on the first session and quickly knew that I would be able to step away from being as involved as I had been. I believe David's background is English classics but he can now add Vikings and Nordic literature to his skillset. I highly recommend David.

Knowledgable and Helpful!

David was extremely knowledgable about my topic, Dante's Inferno. I had an upcoming paper about this piece of literature and every question I asked was greeted with a clear, concise and thorough answer. David really helped and I would highly recommend!
