I am a two time Ivy League graduate. I graduated from Dartmouth College with my bachelor's in Economics, then graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a M.S. in Statistics, Measurement, Assessment and Research Technology. I have over 20 years of tutoring experience, and I've tutored failing students from F's to A's in Algebra, Statistics, Economics, Spanish, and a host of other classes.

My love of Math comes from a love of dealing with numbers. Despite people's belief that they are unable to learn Math, I believe that everyone is capable of it -- it all depends on who is on who is teaching you and how you learn it. As a former math teacher of mine used to say, "Math is not a spectator sport." As such, I like to give progressively challenging assignments so you not only understand the basics, but you also understand math at another level.

I have a passion and love for the Spanish language and how the culture and the language influence each other. In addition to taking Spanish all four years during high school, I also minored in U.S. Hispanic Languages and Literature while at Dartmouth. I've traveled to Spain and for 4 months I lived in Montevideo, Uruguay studying the culture and language. Most recently, I taught introductory Spanish to adult learners at an Ivy League college preparatory program for 5 years.

I believe that anyone who embarks upon seeking out a tutor should expect to learn the material requested. My goal is not only to meet that goal but to exceed it. I want to not only teach you the skills needed to learn the material, but to also learn where to find help when you need it. It may seem counter-intuitive, but ultimately, my goal is to make you so confident in your skills or about a topic that you no longer need me anymore.

If you have any questions or want to schedule a lesson feel free to contact me. I look forward to connecting with you soon!

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I KNOW Algebra. I live algebra. Unwillingly, I ended up taking Algebra 1 3 times as a teenager. Once in a summer enrichment program in 7th grade, again in 8th grade, and finally again in 9th grade when I entered high school and the math class I had signed up for didn't have enough students for the school to run it. Because I had Algebra 1 taught to me 3 different ways, I've learned 3 different ways of teaching it, and have used those ways, along with new methods, to teach Algebra to my students. Concepts such as the "do-do principle" (whatever you do to one side of an equation you must to do the other side of the equation aka the equality property) aren't stated in those terms in schools, I learned that it is tricks like this that help students struggling with Algebra get a firm grasp of the subject (while also laughing at it). I employ tips and tricks like these to instill the concepts needed to do well in Algebra, as well as higher math classes.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

Remember Algebra 1? It's back! I had so much fun in Algebra 1 that I took - and aced - Algebra 2 twice - once during a summer program in 9th grade and again in 10th grade as a regular academic class. I then tutored in it in my junior and senior years of high school, led study groups in it all four years of undergrad, and occasionally substituted taught it in the pre-college program I helped out with at the University of Pennsylvania.
Discrete Math

Discrete Math

I've taken classes in discrete math in high school and in college. In college, I got an A- in the course. I've also done computer programming, which required the understanding of Boolean algebra, logic and truth tables to get programs to function as expected.
General Computer

General Computer

My full-time profession is as an IT Manager, working my way up from a desktop technician that just fixed the computers and showed someone how to use it to someone who manages them. However, I also have a background in teaching, so I'm not your "typical" IT person. My goal is to teach you not only how to accomplish your task, but to teach you how to think like a computer and how to figure out where to go when I'm not around.
General Music

General Music

I been involved in music for the past 26 years. I currently play the following instruments at an intermediate to advanced level: Piano Violin Viola Cello Flute/Piccolo Recorder (Sopranino, Soprano, Alto, and Tenor) Oboe/English Horn Clarinet Saxophone Bassoon In college, I also took courses in Music (The Music of Non-Western Peoples and Music Theory) and earned an A- in each course.
Microsoft Access

Microsoft Access

I've designed 3 fully functional Access databases in my years in the IT world. One database was used to track students and their progress as a part of a tutoring company and was created using Access 2000. My most recent database was an Access 2013 database that had a Access front end and a SQL backend. The front-end contained forms and reports based on queries I created. As the database was created to import large spreadsheets, there were macros and scripts created to import this data in a seamless manner for the user, by use of a switchboard with buttons.
Microsoft PowerPoint

Microsoft PowerPoint

I taught PowerPoint at the University of Pennsylvania for 5 years with the Veterans Upward Bound program. In the program, I not only taught the basics of how to create a PowerPoint presentation, but I also taught presentation skills.
Microsoft Windows

Microsoft Windows

I've worked in the IT field for over 10 years, 5 of which I've spent at the University of Pennsylvania as a IT Support Specialist supporting Windows XP and Windows 7 and 8 desktops and laptops. I designed, implemented and taught training curriculum for Divisional staff on proper using of Windows 7 upon our upgrade from Windows SP to Windows 7 in 2010-2011. I currently work as an IT Manager maintaining Windows desktops and servers.
Precalculus

Precalculus

Precalc is an extension of Algebra (the subject I took 3 times through no fault of my own) and Trigonometry (another subject I took a couple of times as a result of a summer enrichment program in 9th grade). I've tutored numerous student (as a student myself and as an instructor) in precalc, and have seen success in each student. It takes making the two seemingly distinct subjects and showing how they relate to each other before the subject makes sense. I make that relationship clear and easily understood.
Spanish

Spanish

Spanish always called to me, so I made sure to get a firm foundation in it by learning about its origin, Latin, before taking my first course in Spanish in high school. After that I was hooked. Continued learning the language in college by minoring in it, doing a study abroad in South America and purposely putting myself in places where I'd be force to speak it. As a result, after college, I was able to secure a role as a Spanish instructor for adult learners at an Ivy League institution.
Statistics

Statistics

After taking AP Stats in high school I fell in love with it. So much so that I was actually happy that my major required us to take Statistics and econometrics. Even after those classes, I still hadn't had enough Stats, so I got my MS from the University of Pennsylvania in Statistics, Measurement, Assessment and Research Technology. What can I say, I LOVE Statistics. This love comes through when I teach it. I relate statistics back to real life to teach and reinforce the concepts. I make it fun, and after having it a few times, I have a few mnemonics to help remember the most important concepts.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

For someone who loved Algebra (I took 3 years of it plus summer enrichment courses in advanced algebra) and Geometry, trigonometry was the best of both worlds (before I discovered calculus) Trigonometry may be a little difficult at first, but the key to understanding all of it has its foundations in understanding the basic functions. I teach these functions until they become as simple as 1+1=2. Once that basis is established, I use simple language to build upon the foundation, bringing you to mastery of the subject that you thought was so difficult.
Violin

Violin

I've been playing stringed instruments since 1992. I've played in my high school orchestra that traveled to Montreal, Quebec, and Israel. I've been invited to play in youth orchestras because of my viola/violin and musical abilities, and have traveled to Spain and London to go on tour. I've also participated in the Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra, the Dartmouth Chamber Orchestra, and the Baroque Players while I attended Dartmouth. Most recently, I co-founded a violin/cello duo called Fretless in Philly.

Very valuable viola tips

Steven got me from zero to playing sheet music notes on the viola in one hour. I used to play a little violin a long time ago, so when I had tried the viola on my own I was super confused by the little differences, such as the alto clef in the viola sheet music. Steven shared with me some secret, violin-to-viola tips that let me skip past a lot of frustration!

Very knowledgeable!

Even in just one session I feel so much more comfortable with Excel. He's a gifted teacher and knows how to make the most out of a session. I'm going to continue to use regularly.
