Bio

With a PhD in English, publications critical and creative, extensive teaching experience (at the primary, secondary, and college levels since 2003), and an unabashedly enthusiastic love for both the written word and for cultivating that love in others, I am qualified to tutor across the breadth of English studies and happy to help people develop their knowledge and understanding of composition and literature so that they can better look at the world around them and make sense of it.

I have been a published poet, in print and online, since 2005, and have written to commission. This is in addition to having taught focused seminars in both the composition and interpretation of poetry, as well as being tapped by local agencies to lead creative writing workshops. My focus is in sonnets, limericks, and alliterative verse.

In addition to holding graduate degrees in English, I have taught English composition, language, and literature since the mid-2000s. Further, I successfully conduct literary research. This all combines to afford me superior expertise in the use of English.

In addition to teaching essay-writing at the high school and college levels, I have written essays both academic (presented at conferences and incorporated into edited collections) and personal (typically published online). Additionally, I have written solicited pieces as requested by clients. Consequently, I have expertise in identifying ideas and bearing them out through reasoned, balanced prose.

Over the past few years, I have taught multiple sections of remedial and developmental English, first-year composition, and technical writing each term. This has been in addition to my own work to publish research writing. As such, I have developed superior proficiency in identifying deviations from Standard Edited American English.

The coursework and exams from my graduate studies cover Old and Middle English literature, early modern English literature, early American literature, and contemporary fantasy literature of the US and UK. In addition, I have taught collegiate English literature courses since the mid-2000s. Further, I successfully conduct literary research.

Through writing thousands of pages of text for coursework and ongoing research, I have developed an excellent working knowledge of Word. I have used it in my teaching, as well, both in preparing teaching materials and in assessing student work. Further, I have coached a number of students in how to use Word.

In addition to writing several successful personal statements myself, by which I gained admission to academic programs of choice and professional opportunities, I have coached several tutees on Wyzant through their own similar courses of composition. Further, I have worked in person and on other platforms to help people present themselves at their peak so that they could gain access to their preferred programs and professional identities. I have taught college-level public speaking courses since 2010. In addition, I have given a number of formal research presentations at regional and international scholarly conferences. These have included the South Central Modern Language Association conference and the International Congress on Medieval Studies. In each, I have been praised for my lucidity of presentation and clarity of speech.

I hold a PhD in English, which I could only gain from many long hours spent poring over texts to uncover the ideas concealed within them. I have continued the doctoral work in literary research presented at regional and international conferences. Too, I have taught basic reading skills at the collegiate level.

I successfully completed both a master's thesis and a doctoral dissertation. In addition, I have worked with degree candidates in fields ranging from aerospace engineering to cybersecurity, education to psychology, to help them successfully compose their own keystone works and earn degrees.

The focus of my study affords me expertise in the development of English. This has helped me to understand the ways in which English takes in and develops new words. In addition, my classroom teaching experience has included explicit instruction in vocabulary for a number of years, now, so that I am abundantly qualified to help develop understanding of vocabulary.

I have written thousands, if not tens of thousands, of pages of papers for classes, papers for publication, entries for formal and informal blogs, fiction, poetry, and freelance orders. The experience of doing so has done much to improve my understanding of writing processes, which I am happy to share with clients.
