About Matthew

Bio

This past January 2020 I took the MCAT, placing 100th percentile with a 131/132 (99th percentile) for the CARS section. Since then, I've tutored many students over all sections of the MCAT, focusing primarily on test taking strategies and how they can take their hardest sections of the MCAT and break it into smaller manageable problems.

Beyond test prep, as a recent graduate from an Ivy League University, I know what it's like to be in your shoes. I've been challenged by the same problems...

I've been challenged by the same problems you're facing, and I've developed the tools to help myself, and you, excel.

I'm a recent graduate from the University of Pennsylvania and here's what I've accomplished during that time:
- Computational Biology degree, STEM subjects from Comp. Sci. to Biology
- Business degree, focusing on the fundamentals of Statistics
- Premed track, scoring 100th percentile on the MCAT

What I'm more than comfortable helping you with:
- Intro level Chemistry (inorganic, organic)
- Physics (Mech., E&M)
- Biology (Genetics, Evolutionary, Biochem)
- Statistics (Probability, Classical, Bayesian Statistics, R)
- Test Prep (MCAT: 524/528; SAT II BIO/Chem/Physics: 800/800; SAT: 2370/2400; ACT: 35/36; )

Teaching Style:
My teaching style is visual and I love to use examples. As someone who finds fundamental understanding to be the best way to truly learn a subject, I like to focus on the reason why things are what they are and their relationship to other concepts. I believe this teaching style allows for greater retention, and the ability to solve more advanced problems.

General Qualifications:
I've had ample experience as a tutor, tutoring 6+ different High School subjects prior enrolling at UPenn. In college I also served as a Teaching assistant for a Computer Science class where I led small break out lectures to go over challenging concepts and problems. Through those experience I've really enjoyed connecting with students and giving them the tools to begin solving complex problems on their own.

Chemistry

Tutored High school level chemistry including Pre-AP and AP. Completed and excelled at a full pre-med track, including: Introduction to chemistry (thermodynamics, kinetics, quantum mechanics, bonding). Organic chemistry (chemical structures, classes of reactions, chemical geometry). Organic Chemistry lab (lab processes, IR & NMR spectra). Biochemistry (enzyme kinetics, biochemical foundations of metabolism)
MCAT

MCAT

My test preparation involved purchasing books and self-studying for the MCAT, taken January 2020. My overall score ranked at the 100th percentile with individual subjects Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems: 97th percentile Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills: 99th percentile Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems: 100th percentile Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior: 98th percentile
Statistics

Statistics

Graduated from the Wharton School with a concentration in Statistics and have taken courses on probability theory, classical statistics, bioinformatics, Bayesian statistics, and the application of statistics in marketing models. As a research assistant in an oncology lab I implemented statistical tools in R to assess the correlative and causative affects of particular genes on immune pathways, classify cell classes using clustering algorithms, and align DNA and RNA reads among other roles

Matthew is the man! (497 to 513)

I am a non-traditional medical school applicant who attempted to self-study for the MCAT. However, after one month of studying and seeing almost no progress (scoring under 500 on three consecutive practice exams), I decided to reach out to a tutor for help. Matthew stood out to me instantly due to his impressive resume, positive reviews, and very reasonable hourly rate. His teaching style allows him to explain complex concepts in simple terms, and he showed me new ways to approach passages that made a massive difference in my score. Additionally, he is a very nice guy, fun to work with, and genuinely cares about your success. Over the course of one month, Matthew helped me raise my score from a 497 to 513. Needless to say, I cannot recommend him highly enough!

Really amazing tutor!!

I came to Matthew about 6 weeks before a retake of my MCAT exam, I had tried studying alone many times, but nothing was working. He had great reviews, was around my age, and his resume was very impressive! I’m so glad that I made that decision as he was the best tutor I’ve ever had. He was very patient with me, and made sure to bring relevant questions to the topics we were going over. I really liked his method of breaking down passages to understand what they are really asking; this was something I had so much trouble with. Matthew also really cares about the progress and success of his students; he makes sure to ask updates on how your strategies and tests are going. He even sent me a good luck message before my real exam, and followed up with me many times after. The 2 times I took the exam prior, I scored below a 500 each time, but after tutoring with Matt for just 5 weeks my score increased 8 points! It was in the range that we were shooting for, and I am so pleased with it. I really recommend Matt; he’s smart, so helpful, and just a really nice person as well. Totally worth it!

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

He was very helpful as he provided my daughter with lots of techniques on how to tackle the sections on the MCAT. After each section, she would tell how much she had learned after each section. I would recommend him as a tutor!

Knowledgable & Prepared

Matthew really helped me hone down on concepts, mentioned strategies I should use, and important ways to frame the question. This was my first lesson but it definitely won't be my last. He did an excellent job and came prepared.

High school Physics and Chemistry

Matthew has been very helpful to our son. He has also been quite flexible in working with our son’s often unpredictable schedule. We hope to continue to work with him in the future if he remains available.

THE BEST! Highly recommend!

I've worked with dozens of tutors over the past few years, and Matthew is by far the best! When I first started my college statistics class this semester I was often confused and quite frankly disliked the subject all together. During my first lesson with Matthew, he explained all of the problems thoroughly and gave helpful insight into tackling each problem. He listened carefully to my questions and even provided useful practice problems on the spot. I now feel so much more confident heading into my statistics final and truthfully I now enjoy the subject all together. I look forward to working with Matthew again in the future and HIGHLY recommend him!
