Thanks for considering me as your ACT tutor! I'm a graduate of the University of Chicago, where I majored in English and was named to the Dean's List. I have worked with dozens of students over the years, ranging in age from the elementary to college level. I currently focus on helping students prepare for the ACT. I know the test well and I meet each student where they are academically, with an eye to helping them reach their goals for the test and beyond.

Thanks for considering me as your ACT tutor! I'm a graduate of the University of Chicago, where I majored in English and was named to the Dean's List. I have worked with dozens of students over the years, ranging in age from the elementary to college level. I currently focus on helping students prepare for the ACT. I know the test well and I meet each student where they are academically, with an eye to helping them reach their goals for the test and beyond.

Beginning with our first meeting, I make a sincere effort to find my students' academic interests and incorporate them into our work preparing for the ACT. I'll demonstrate how to approach the test in manageable chunks, building confidence and ability at the same time. As students progress, material that began seeming difficult will become more familiar and approachable. As a tutor I'm constantly refining my approach based on student and parent feedback. Since one-on-one tutoring is all about getting the individual attention that students need to learn, I'm always open to questions that will help clarify concepts we're working on.

I know that studying for a standardized test may feel intimidating, and that many students struggle with test anxiety. I'll work with students on building content knowledge that increases confidence, as well as strategies to help relax and give your best effort on test day.

Understanding the ACT Mathematics section means knowing the fundamental math content of the five major areas that are being tested: algebra and functions, geometry, trigonometry, statistics and probability, and number theory. I'll walk you through each one, reviewing concepts that students already know and demonstrating any that they don't, until they're comfortable with any question that might appear on the test.

ACT English

As an undergraduate English major, I love words and writing, but neither are strictly necessary to do well on the ACT English section. The most important things are learning the rules of standard written English, remembering how and where to apply them, and practicing the very specific type of sentence corrections that make up the majority of this section.
ACT Math

ACT Math

Math was never my favorite subject in school, and I think that helps me relate to students who are struggling or bored with the ACT Math section. After learning the details of the ACT Math section, it also taught me that even students without a natural affinity for the topic can master the limited range of math subjects tested on the ACT.
ACT Reading

ACT Reading

There is one guiding principle to this portion of the test: virtually every correct answer will have a direct piece of relevant supporting evidence in the text. Remembering this is the single most important thing for improving student scores on the test, and my tutoring practice is largely spent helping students hone their confidence in identifying each correct answer this way.
ACT Science

ACT Science

I've studied every ACT Science section practice test, both from the Official ACT Prep Guide and in publicly available previous versions of the test. What I've learned from all of them is the importance of correctly understanding the wording of each question, and being able to find precise supporting data for each correct answer. My work with students is to help them understand what each question is asking, where to look for the answer, and how to double check that they've correctly identified each relevant trend (e.g., decreasing or increasing, most vs. least consistent, etc.).

Proofreading is the act of making a sentence say what it wants to, or, more specifically, making it say what YOU want it to. To do this, I'll learn everything I can about your project and your goals for it, read it as carefully and as sensitively as I'm able to, and offer corrections and suggestions that align with your vision of the piece.

Michael is a junior in high school and went in taking the ACT practice test “cold turkey” as was suggested by some people. I think that was not a good idea and anyone who has been advised this should definitely rethink . Even a week with Andrew would help with the stress levels of your student and time management which is what we are looking for.
