About Edgar

Bio

I am a second-year PhD candidate in Mathematics at Rice University, driven by a passion for research and education. I earned a B.Sc in Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a perfect 4.0 GPA, where I also took graduate courses and conducted research in complex analysis, hyperbolic geometry, and the Topology of Curve Shortening Flow. These efforts led to two research papers, one published in the Proceedings of the AMS.

Teaching is equally important to me—I enjoy tutoring high school and college students, especially math majors, aiming to inspire a love for mathematics. I’ve also enriched my studies by attending summer schools in topology and geometry at Princeton University. At Rice, I’ve passed all three qualifying exams in analysis, algebra, and topology, maintaining a perfect GPA as I continue my journey in mathematics.

Approved Subjects

ACT Math

ACT Math

Beginning from scratch, ACT math can seem to be daunting and challenging. In order to dispel the stress and anxiety about ACT Math questions that challenge many of my students, I kindly advise them to read each problem at least twice and make a diagram or draw a picture of what they have understood by re-reading the problem. In my opinion, it is a successful method to tackle ACT Math problems. To sum up, my expertise in tutoring ACT Math has been sought-after, and I truly enjoy helping students to achieve higher scores.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Tutoring Algebra 1, I have been specialized in solving linear equations and systems of linear equations and inequalities. Plus, I have a lot of experience in solving rational, quadratic, radical expressions and equations along with graphing functions both algebraically and geometrically.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

In the case of Algebra 2, I think most of students that I have ever encountered struggle to work with advanced polynomial functions. My encounter with other students have led me to be specialized in graphing rational functions, exponential functions, and logarithmic functions.
Discrete Math

Discrete Math

I am a second year PhD in Mathematics at Rice University. Recently, I passed all my 3 qualifying exams in mathematical analysis, abstract algebra, and topology. Discrete math is an important stepping stone for proof-based math. I have taken this course which mostly includes set theory, proof writing techniques, and mathematical logic.
Geometry

Geometry

In my opinion, geometry is a great tool for students to build and improve analytical thinking. I have an experience in planar trigonometry such as triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, circles as well as area, congruence, and similarity of triangles. I have had a few students with whom I have worked in solid geometry such as polyhedra, spheres, cones, pyramids, and prisms in general.
Precalculus

Precalculus

In Precalculus, the students I have so far tutored have been struggling with vectors and scalars; matrices, conic sections, sequence and series.
SAT Math

To alleviate the stress and anxiety for SAT Math questions that many students struggle to solve, I advise my students to read each problem at least twice and make a diagram or draw a picture of what they have understood by reading the problem. Trigonometry

Trigonometry

In Trigonometry, the students with whom I have worked have had so many questions about the unit circle, trig identities and their proofs. Slightly different, some students struggled with sinusoidal functions.

Knowledgeable and patient

Edgar helped my high school son with Algebra. He went over the quadratic equations and their graphs with him. They did some exercises and word problems regarding systems of equations and linear inequalities. He helped my son completing his homeworks and helped him prepare for his final exam as well. Easy to contact and make appointments. Very prompt. Very happy with the result. Highly recommended. Catherine A.

Pre-calculus -- Edgar is the best!!

My daughter's description of Edgar: kind, all-knowing, brilliant at explaining deeper concepts as well as how to address problems. He makes you feel comfortable learning complex material, even when you're struggling. All in all, he's godlike and masterful! I guess that sums it up. If you need a tutor, get Edgar!

Knowledgeable and thorough

I was having extreme difficulty with polar coordinates, and Edgar helped me cover not only the fundamentals but also go in depth into the subject matter. I am now confident in that sector. He’s a great Precalculus tutor.

Knowledgeable and patient

Edgar teaches pre- algebra to my 7th-grader. He loves learning with Edgar and comes home having mastered the week's lesson. We use a program (AoPS) to which Edgar was not familiar at first. He quickly learned the method/program and is very comfortable teaching it.

Knowledgeable and enthusiastic tutor

Edgar is patient yet energetic, exactly right for my daughter. His clarity helped her understand the concepts she was learning in 10th grade geometry, and his knowledge of the subject allowed him to help her with ease and understanding. He is comfortable and engaging. I would highly recommend Edgar.

Great tutor

Edgar is a Great tutor. He was extremely patient and worked with the same math problems with my daughter and got her understanding the geometrical problems better than her teacher was able to explain it to her.

Responsible, conscientious, patient, and knowledgable!

Edgar has worked with my twelve year old son for two sessions now. He's friendly, patient, and committed. My son has enjoyed the time they've worked together and feels Edgar is helping him reach a deeper understanding of the material covered in his 7th grade math class. Things can move quickly in the classroom and it's a relief knowing we have Edgar to help when needed!

Edgar is incredibly patient person, but importantly, a great teacher. He was able to explain material in a simple, easy way , that math doesn't seem daunting to my son anymore . Furthermore, my son got his first ever " A" in math test since we started working with Edgar. We highly recommend Edgar to any student, struggling with math.
