Having taught in the large classroom setting for many years, I was able to see that most students would have excelled more rapidly if they had been able to receive additional one-on-one instruction. The curricula and the formats under which I taught only allowed for tutoring in after-school hours. For many students, this was not feasible due to other obligations, such as jobs and family commitments.
However, I have done enough one-on-one tutoring to see the benefits that students received as a result of the extra time. In all cases, I was able to define the underlying deficiencies for the student, subsequently prescribe a study plan in which the students were able to literally teach themselves to overcome their areas of deficiency. This method had tremendous effects on students' level of self-confidence. This has been noted in learners ranging from middle-school age to college age.
With a Bachelor's degree in Education, English (ELA) concentration, and a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction, concentration, Distance Learning (online instruction), I have spent many hours studying the learning styles of all types and levels of learners. I have utilized individualized strategies to help students prepare for standardized tests, revise and edit essays, improve public speaking, and analyze literary devices. Additionally, I have a passion for breaking poor grammar habits! Bottom line, I love teaching and tutoring English Language Arts.
I'm eager to get started to help all students get on top of the learning game!
