I have been in adult education at the university level for the past 12 years. I taught introductory courses in critical thinking and problem solving, developmental English, speech, and research. I understand the particular need for adults to apply learning to their own life goals in practical ways. I recognize that every person has one or more learning styles and I modify my teaching approach to match their most effective style.
I am venturing into English as a Second Language (ESL) because I have lived and worked in two languages other than English (Spanish and French) , and I appreciate the challenges that adults face in making the transition in thought and expression to achieve a functional mastery of English. I hold a doctoral degree, so I am a disciplined and serious student myself. I want students to develop the time management and study skills necessary to reach their career potential and harness their learning experiences in the past to take full advantage of their proficiency in English.
I have taught English at the university level for 12 years, and I have been the manager of a university-level tutoring center for most of that same period. I acknowledge that every person requires a special approach to be able to learn and retain language principles.
I look forward to meeting adults who are eager to improve their command of English and enhance their ability to pursue careers and be effective leaders in their respective professions. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I feel that I am well qualified to tutor people in public speaking skills and techniques. I have been a member of Toastmasters International for nearly ten years, and I have earned the Distinguished Toastmaster award, which less than 1% of members earn. I have used the methods and techniques from Toastmasters to improve the quality of public speaking for students in my own university classes, and I have promoted such practices in the workplace to enhance the ability of people to make PPT presentations and train people in many subject areas. I can provide a PDF copy of my Distinguished Toastmaster award certificate.
I have a TOEFL certification from the Oxford Seminars, which I earned during a 60-hour classroom and 40-hour online course on Nov. 8, 2015. I also have access to advice and guidance from professional TOEFL instructors at the Bilingual Education Institute in Houston, Texas where I volunteer as a conversational ESL instructor.
As a manager of a university tutoring center and an adjunct professor at DeVry University and the University of Phoenix in Houston, Texas for over 10 years, I have been able to help many students to improve their writing skills.
