Hello! I hold a PhD in History from the University of Houston and have teaching experience in the private high school setting.

Prior to my doctoral studies, I graduated from UT Austin in May 2013 with a B.A. in History with high honors and also completed an English minor. I earned an overall GPA of 3.97 in my upper-division History coursework and a 4.0 GPA in my upper-division English coursework. I graduated from UT in three years.

Before enrolling in graduate school, I worked as a College Access Coach, helping students with SAT/ACT prep, major and career exploration, application essay writing, and the college selection and application process. This was a wonderful opportunity for me--I can't imagine a more fun and rewarding job!

I would love the opportunity to assist students with their essay writing, English and History assignments, and SAT/ACT test prep. I've seen first hand just how important these test scores are for gaining admission to higher-tier universities and know that students can greatly improve their scores once armed with the necessary knowledge and skills. My speciality is the ACT English section, as I've seen many of my students' scores improve with a little review, guidance, and of course, practice. With regard to History, my specialty is in Early Modern Europe (1450-1700), and I also have four years of experience as a TA for American History courses.

Additionally, for those high school and/or college students struggling in basic language requirement classes in French, I would be more than happy to help. I earned a 4.0 in both of the required French classes at UT (601C & 611C), as well as a 4.0 in the course immediately following (317C).

Approved Subjects

ACT English

ACT English

This is the subject I have the most experience in. Almost all of the students I work with saw their English scores increase by at least 2 to 3 points, with several increasing 4-5 points. Every point increase is another step toward gaining automatic admission or a higher amount of merit scholarship awards.
ACT Reading

ACT Reading

One of the most important lessons I learned in College was how to read for main ideas. Most weeks I would routinely be reading several hundreds of pages, both fiction and non-fiction. I strongly encourage the students I currently work with to read challenging material (novels, biographies etc) for at least 20-30 minutes a day.
Basketball

Basketball

I've played Basketball since 1st Grade, attending camps almost every summer until High School. More than once I won MVP for the entire camp for my grade level. In middle school, I played on the eighth grade A team: our team won the district championship that year. Although I chose to play golf in high school, I continued to play outside of school. Once in college, I lived right next to the gym and played 3-4 times a week, as well as on 2-3 intramural teams each year. I am familiar with the vast majority of drills, shooting techniques, and general tactical and position-related strategies.
English

English

I find it's helpful for students to step back and look at their essay assignments with a big picture perspective. What is the purpose of what I'm writing? How might I accomplish that purpose? From my extensive experience writing 6-8 pg History and English papers, I've also learned that proper planning and brainstorming are essential. I encourage students to think out loud and form a line of thinking in this way before beginning an actual essay.
Golf

Golf

I have played golf since 6th grade. I took lessons throughout high school and played on the High School varsity team. Currently, I volunteer at the First Tee of Greater Austin teaching kids basic golf skills like chipping and putting techniques. I also work with older students (High School) on course management and full swing drills.
Grammar

Grammar

A significant part of my work as a college access coach has been editing application essays. In combination with the time I've spent tutoring ACT English, I've developed a sharp eye for errors of all types: spelling, punctuation, structural mistakes etc. I've found that many of my students simply never learned certain grammar rules.
Reading

Reading

I often tell my students that one of the best ways to become a better writer is to read consistently. I've tried to lead by example through reading numerous difficult works over the past year. My ability to process these large works was certainly honed in upper-division English classes, wherein we routinely read 75-100 pages every evening of novels such as Middle March and Great Expectations.
Religion

Religion

Many of my college courses had religious components or in fact were specifically centered around religion: Rise of Christianity, Introduction to Islam, Islamic Theology, Catholic Church and Jewish Relations etc. Additionally, I was part of a Christian Fraternity on campus wherein I lead a bible study group of 6 men.
Writing

Writing

Writing well is the key to earning A's in college courses, especially upper-division courses. I have experience writing summaries, rhetorical analysis papers, reading responses, historical research papers, synthesis essays, in-class written exams and other modes relevant to liberal arts majors. While both the content and presentation of written work are important, I encourage students to focus on clarifying their thinking before troubling themselves with issues of style. Teachers and Professors are almost universally more concerned with the quality of a student's ideas than with their ability to write lyrically.
