I am currently a freelance translator (e.g., safety data sheets for a chemical production company) My experience comes not only from teaching but also having lived abroad.

Prior to François Hollande's inauguration, I lived in Romilly-sur-Seine in the Champagne-Ardenne region of France, where I worked as a "professeur," taught English and Japanese, as well as assisted in Calculus taught in English. My passion for language, art, and teaching has always been invaluable towards achieving my goals.

In 2013, I graduated as Cum Laude from the University of Houston with a B.A. in French and a minor in Studio Art: my GPA in French being a 3.75. During my time at UH, I worked for two years as the departmental French Tutor and previously tutored Pre-Calculus and Calculus at the tutoring center. While working on my degree, I studied abroad twice, spending time in Angers, France at the Université Catholique de l'Ouest. At UCO, I spent most of my time studying 17th Century French Literature. In particular, my focus was on "La Princesse de Clèves" by Mme de Lafayette. The theme for my "dissertation" was the purpose/function of death (la mort) in her novel. I also did Post doc work in Neurolinguistics as well and Social Psychology one of the authorities on POS, i.e., Perceived Organizational Support. I did a lot of research, but in particular I helped create questionnaires for studies, because he had the highest trust that my questionnaires were the most neutral in nature and would not sway the respondents or cause any sort of cathartic response. This was a course for thesis writing and brainstorming among doctoral candidates, so the content was very high register (very technical).

PS

Places of meeting: I tutor online, and very few exceptions are made due to a recent injury.
My availability should be set to 24/7. If it isn't feel free to contact me otherwise. I can always adjust my time translating, and am constantly in contact with friends and colleagues in France and Japan.

Drawing

I graduated from the University of Houston with a B.A. in French and a minor in Studio Art. The minor in Studio Art requires that each candidate take 33 semester hours of fine arts courses (3-hour credit per course) each course lasting 5 hours a week. I have done art, (drawn, painted, sculpted, etc) for my entire life and won several awards in the competitive part of my life. I have taught drawing in the traditional way which involves the focus on craftsmanship, draughtsmanship and technical skill. Each student I have taught has been catered to according to age and level. Courses of mine involve a life drawing to assess skill level/maturity with the optional portfolio, then by learning about value, line hierarchy and other important aspects of drawing. The "drawing" classes involve any 2D media excluding the paints meaning: pen and ink, graphite, cut paper, pastels, charcoals, mixed media (including water colors but excluding acrylic and oil unless toned down). In addition to having taught, I have also judged art at the Texas French Symposium on multiple occasions.

Knowledgeable, Informative and adaptive

Of all my years in school, I have never had someone so helpful as Mathew has been. He is extremely knowledgeable in not only Japanese, but concepts and language as a whole, as well as new and efficient teaching methods. I was worried at first because I know next to nothing about Japanese, and I know it is a huge undertaking to teach from scratch, but he handled this very well, with many ideas of how to approach the situation. He is very accommodating and patient, and knows how to adapt to the style of the student. He puts his all into the lesson and explains things very well. He even stayed nearly an hour later than the scheduled time helping me without charge! I seriously cannot recommend him enough, and will be looking forward to working with him much more in the future as our lessons progress!

Knowledgeable, Personable

This was the first meeting so we discussed my goals, started with simple phrases and I found out what I needed to study for vocabulary and which written form I should learn. We also discussed the Japanese culture, things I should be aware of when in Japan, food etc. I look forward to learning with Mathew.

Excellent tutor of Japanese and maths.

Mathew is an excellent tutor of both Japanese and maths. He has a passion for teaching and a remarkable grasp of the cultural nuances of Japanese as well as an appreciation for the technical challenges of learning a non-European language. He is accommodating, adapts his style to changing student needs and genuinely cares about your progress in mastering a difficult subject. He is well-prepared, flexible and generous with his time. His versatility (mastery of three disparate languages--English, French, Japanese plus skill in maths and composition) is a bonus at test time as he's willing to take time away from the subject you may have hired him to tutor and answer ad hoc questions about others.
