About William

I am a mathematics PhD student at Rice University with years of experience teaching and tutoring a variety of classes aimed at science and mathematics students at the university and high school level. Having excelled in countless upper division and graduate mathematics classes, I can say, without a doubt, that mathematics is one of the most beautiful subjects a person can explore.

I think this is where the vast majority of math teachers and tutors lose their students. As a result, my foremost goal in teaching is to convey both a sense of understanding and appreciation of mathematics. A student who hates a subject he or she does not understand will never truly learn, and conversely, a student who finds an idea beautiful will be much more inclined to pursue and explore it. I have helped many students of various ages, backgrounds, and levels of knowledge reach this point. During the academic year, I am a tutor, teaching assistant, and grader, and I have years of experience tutoring for many different classes.

I can tutor and have experience with calculus, pre-calculus, algebra I, algebra II, geometry, trigonometry, number theory, real and complex analysis, abstract algebra, discrete math, statistics, high school physics, etc.

For test preparations, I can help with all sections of the SAT, on which I made a 2220 with 800 math (uncurved -- every question correct), and on the GRE.

If you or your child want to reach a level of understanding that most teachers and tutors do not offer, please contact me. I would love to meet and tell you more about my experience and methods.
I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Calculus

Teaching calculus is my primary duty as a university teaching assistant. As an undergraduate, I was employed as a tutor for the Texas Interdisciplinary Program, an honors program at UT Austin. I have been tutoring all levels of calculus for years, starting in High School and continuing through to now as a PhD student.

Differential Equations

I am a PhD student in mathematics at Rice University. I am currently a teaching assistant for a differential equations course and therefore have a thorough knowledge of the course material and related subjects.

Discrete Math

As a math major at UT, I took honors discrete math, in which I made an A.

English

I scored top marks (5) on both English Language and Literature AP tests and scored in the 99th percentile on the SAT writing section.

Even as a math major, I have taken a wide variety of writing intensive philosophy and English classes.

Linear Algebra

Linear algebra is one of the most fundamental areas of mathematics. I use it every day in my research and have tutored it extensively. I tutor both the computational and abstract sides of the subject.

SAT Math

I made a 2220 on the SAT with an 800 on the math section. While it is possible to attain 800 even while missing a few questions, I still answered every question correctly. This is extremely difficult and rare, even among SAT tutors.

Violin

During my 10 years of violin experience, I have been in principal or concertmaster positions with four orchestras, including the University of Texas Orchestra and the Sherman Symphony Orchestra. Along with being an experienced performer, I have taught both children and high school students of various levels.

Knowledgeable & excellent tutor

William is an excellent Calculus tutor. He was able to help my daughter understand and feels confident about Calculus. She also learns faster ways to derive to the same answers. I highly recommend Will.
