Hi, I’m Kai! I graduated from Emory University with a BS in Biology, where I built a strong foundation in biology and studied subjects including biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, and cell biology. While in college, I also tutored students in biochemistry and genetics. I am interested in working with students currently taking biology-related courses, from the middle school level through college.
My tutoring style focuses on making complicated material feel much less intimidating. Biology often comes with unfamiliar vocabulary, complicated pathways, and a lot of information at once, so I try to break concepts down into simple language, metaphors, and smaller pieces that are easier to understand. I also spend time figuring out exactly where a student is getting confused rather than simply repeating the same explanation. From there, we can work through the concept together, connect it to what the student already understands, and practice applying it to questions.
I also use a lot of teach-back in my sessions. After we have worked through a concept, I may return to it later in the lesson and ask the student to explain it to me as if I were someone with no biology background. This helps reinforce the material while also showing us where any gaps in understanding may remain. I encourage students to come to sessions with questions, difficult concepts, or topics they want to work through. My goal is to act as a guide as students build their own understanding and become more confident working through biology independently. I believe biology becomes much more interesting and manageable when students understand the story behind what is happening instead of simply memorizing a list of terms.

Approved Subjects

Biochemistry

Biochemistry

I completed a Biochemistry course at Emory University during my junior year and earned an A at the end of the semester. I am well versed in the different metabolic processes that occur in biology and how they can relate to diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and cancer. I am also comfortable explaining the fundamental concepts and interactions that make these processes possible, including the properties of different amino acids, hydrophobic interactions, and the structures and interactions of various macromolecules in biochemistry.
Biology

Biology

At Emory University, I completed Introductory Biology I and II and earned an A in both courses. Through these courses, I developed a strong understanding of the components of both eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells, introductory metabolic processes, and the mechanisms behind DNA replication and gene expression. I also worked in two biology research labs at Emory University, where I was able to apply and reinforce these fundamental concepts. I believe that my experience learning and applying this material throughout my undergraduate education has prepared me to guide students in breaking down complex biology topics into clear, digestible, and tangible concepts.
Ecology

Ecology

At Emory University, I completed a course in Ecology, and in high school, I took AP Environmental Science. I earned an A in both courses, but more importantly, I developed a strong understanding of ecology and the interactions between biotic and abiotic factors that support life on our planet. Drawing from these experiences, I aim to help my students understand the different elemental cycles in the environment, how phylogenetic trees illustrate relationships among present-day species, and the importance of recognizing how ecosystems function and how their various components interact.
Microbiology

Microbiology

At Emory University, I completed an introductory Microbiology course. In this course, I learned about bacterial morphology, cell-to-cell communication, viral and bacterial biology, and many other key topics within the field of microbiology. Drawing from this experience, I am confident in my ability to review and teach microbiology concepts in a clear and engaging way that helps students build a strong understanding of the material.
