I taught high school English for 5 years (English 1, 2, and 3) and Journalism/Photojournalism/Yearbook before stepping into private tutoring. I work with high school students and adults, including reading and writing fundamentals, GED preparation, and coaching on college application essays.

I taught high school English for 5 years (English 1, 2, and 3) and Journalism/Photojournalism/Yearbook before stepping into private tutoring. I work with high school students and adults, including reading and writing fundamentals, GED preparation, and coaching on college application essays.
My approach is straightforward: I figure out what's actually getting in the way, and we work from there. Some students need to slow down and build grammar from the ground up. Some need to find their voice on the page. Some are adults returning to school who haven't been in a classroom in years and need someone who meets them where they are, without making them feel behind. I've worked with all of these.
For students applying to college, I offer essay coaching to help you find the real story you want to tell and write it in your own voice rather than what you think they want to hear.

Sessions are 60 or 90 minutes, online or in-person. I have a broad availability, and I respond quickly to messages.

I spent 5 years teaching high school English, with essay writing at the center of nearly every unit — personal narratives, analytical essays, argument-based research, and everything in between. I've worked with students at every skill level, from those learning to structure a paragraph for the first time to those writing college-level analysis. For students applying to college, I specialize in Common App and supplemental essay coaching: helping you find the real story worth telling and write it in your own voice. I also work with adult learners who are building or returning to writing skills after time away from the classroom.

I taught photojournalism and served as yearbook adviser for two years within a five-year teaching career, so I can explain composition, lighting, and editing in a way that actually clicks for a student. I've been shooting professionally as Jess M. Portraits since 2024, covering portrait, event, and sports photography, and I edit every image myself in Adobe Lightroom. I can teach camera fundamentals for beginners or help more advanced students develop a personal style and build a portfolio. I'm comfortable with DSLR, mirrorless, and smartphone photography instruction, depending on what equipment a student has access to.
