I'm Sylvia! I am currently an undergraduate student at Arizona State University Online. Growing up, I always enjoyed school and learning new things, but became frustrated when my teacher's explanation didn't make sense or I felt like I was behind my class. In these times, a great tutor made all the difference in helping me not only to understand, but to be able to enjoy the process again. While I have no formal tutoring experience, I have helped siblings, classmates, and friends understand challenging topics many times. In each lesson, I aim to first determine the current ability of the student and any foundational gaps they may have. I collaborate with the student while teaching new material, continuously asking them questions to help them reach the right answer or improve in some way. I act less like a teacher and more like a coach: someone who the student can relate to and have a positive relationship with.
In terms of my qualifications, I graduated valedictorian of my high school class at 16 years old of with a 4.4 GPA and a received a 1580 on the SAT. I was a semi-finalist for the National Merit Scholarship. I received a 4 on AP US History, AP Environmental Science, and AP Language and Composition, and a 5 on AP Calculus AB. I am a skilled test-taker and experienced online learner, having attended high school remotely. This experience helps me to effectively support students on this virtual platform, helping them to stay motivated, engaged, and organized.
I am a skilled teacher in a wide variety of subjects, but particularly SAT prep, spelling, and middle and high school math.
