Hello! My name is Sam, and I am a tutor specializing in math, economics, Spanish, and ESL. I am currently pursuing a Master of Business Administration at Rice University (GPA: 3.8/4.0). I also hold a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Rice and a Master of Real Estate Development from the University of Miami.
Concurrently with my iterations of study, I have ample experience as both a tutor and a TA. I have worked at Rice for five years as a Spanish language consultant for the university's foreign language school, working individually with students with proficiencies ranging from entry-level to advanced with speaking, grammar, and reading comprehension. In my graduate programs, I have served as a TA in business communication and finance courses, working with up to 20 students at a time. Lastly, I have 3 years' experience working as a private tutor covering subjects like high school Spanish, micro/macroeconomics, algebra, and pre-calculus with individual clients, and I have primarily assisted with assignment help and exam preparation on at least a weekly basis.
I have developed my tutoring approach on empowering students to be confident about their knowledge in a given subject area. I believe that any student is capable of learning and mastering material; students may just need a tutor to help reinforce what they learn in class within a more familiar environment in which they are free to ask questions on their terms and according to their needs. By way of a friendly and patient demeanor, I seek to bridge the gap between initial exposure and mastery of new material. My approach centers on reviewing the presented subject ahead of a tutoring session, preparing my version of a lesson, going through it with a student and encouraging questions, walking students through examples, and then having students practice on their own. In enabling students to apply their knowledge, I help them complement their learning experience with mastery of the subject.
