For the past four years, I have taught ESL to adults through my church. My class of around thirty students ranges in age from 25 to 70 and the students are from all over the world. These students have an intermediate to high-intermediate proficiency level in English and hope to be fluent. Class is in person Monday and Wednesday from 9:30 to 12:30 and we focus on improving students' English grammar, conversation, communication, and writing skills. In our program, there are five levels; I teach level 4. On average, 80% of my students move to the next level after 15 weeks in my class. Those students who do not move ahead have not attended class regularly or done their homework. I am a kind and patient teacher and I also emphasize the importance of homework and hard work.
Before working as an ESL teacher, I directed the Huntington Learning Center in Spring Branch. Our student population was around one hundred students aged 5 to 18. I managed a team of twenty teachers and assisted in teaching when necessary. I also regularly tutored high school students, one-on-one, preparing them for the ACT and SAT college entrance exams. Our success rate of student acceptance into the college of their choice approached 100%.
I have an undergraduate degree in French and Art History from Hollins University and an MBA from the University of Houston. Before working at Huntington, I worked with Houston Ballet and the Children's Museum in fundraising and grant-writing.
As best stated by Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." The joy of teaching ESL is that I have the honor of seeing a student learn to fish as they master the impossible - the English language.
If you feel I am a good match for you, I look forward to meeting you. Thank you for your time and good luck in your search.
