I then accepted a job as a full time teacher at Dallas ISD, teaching an 18+ special education class. I have also taught special education at the middle and elementary school levels.
When teaching, I try to get to know students and tailor subjects to their interests and passions. For example, if a student likes sports, I might try to adapt lessons to that. I had one student in particular who was a big football fan, so I based a math lesson off of a football game. (If Team A defeats Team B, 35-27, what is the difference between the two scores?)
I have taught students of all ages, from 5 year olds to young adults. I have primarily taught students in small groups, constantly checking for mastery by using formative assessments.
My teachers were always very patient with me and found new ways to explain things to me when I wasn't understanding them. This is the approach I have taken with my students. I believe it is very important to adapt a lesson when students are not demonstrating mastery.
I want students to have fun learning and I want them to be successful in reaching their academic goals. I welcome any input or suggestions that parents and students can provide. I am easily accessible and will provide prompt responses.
