About Josh

Bio

My tutoring specialty is helping students with their custom projects in the Unity game engine. I’ve found that most students come to me not to be guided on a long term path to learn game development (some do) but usually rather because they are stuck on some specific problem in their project. And I think this is the best way to learn. While helping solve their specific problems, I talk about the game development and computer science philosophies and best practices that help in each situation....

My tutoring specialty is helping students with their custom projects in the Unity game engine. I’ve found that most students come to me not to be guided on a long term path to learn game development (some do) but usually rather because they are stuck on some specific problem in their project. And I think this is the best way to learn. While helping solve their specific problems, I talk about the game development and computer science philosophies and best practices that help in each situation. And of course I talk about what specific actions in Unity help with their issues. Through this method I’ve observed tremendous growth in my students.

I have two years of experience tutoring and consulting for students in Unity projects. I've got nine years of experience personally using the Unity game engine and programming in C#. I worked at a game development studio building an application called Bonfire that’s currently available on Steam. I've created an asset called Traversal Pro that I published on the Unity Asset Store. I have a YouTube channel providing tutorial videos for Unity development.

I’ve extensively studied programming concepts, especially Object Oriented Design, Data Oriented Design, and the SOLID design principles. I’ve worked a lot on physics simulations in games (my favorite subject), UI systems, development tools, and procedural generation to list just a few.

I have a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy from California State University, Sacramento. Studying Philosophy was a fantastic bedrock for later learning programming and game development (and really everything in life) as it trains you to think critically and simplify complex concepts down to small pieces.

I’m currently working on a game where you explore an outdoor, open environment with a physically simulated off-road vehicle and grapple hook. Hopefully I’ll be able to share more details and videos for this game soon!

I have nine years of experience using the Unity game engine, programming in C#, and tutoring students in Unity projects. I’ve worked with adults and children as young as 10 years old. I've worked at a professional game development studio, I've published my own asset on the Unity Asset Store, I have a YouTube channel providing tutorial videos for Unity development, and I’ve worked on tons of projects in between. I’ve seen it all and I can help students get through the tough parts!
