In our sessions, students practice summarizing passages and finding details that support their thinking. For test prep, we also work on pacing and strategies for evaluating answer choices.

I offer one-on-one online English tutoring for grades 6–9, helping students strengthen foundational skills and manage increasingly demanding classwork. I also prepare students for the English and verbal sections of the middle- and upper-level ISEE and SSAT, as well as the HSPT.

I hold a B.S. and a Juris Doctor, along with a TEFL/TESOL certificate. I have several years of experience teaching literacy and ESL at Los Angeles City College and Santa Barbara City College. My legal training shapes my approach to reading and writing.

In close-reading lessons, students learn to explain their interpretations with evidence. When describing a character as “angry” or “lonely,” for example, they identify specific words and details that support that interpretation.

In writing lessons, students develop focused theses and organize their ideas clearly. We also practice short constructed responses that answer the question directly and use precise evidence within a limited space.

For test preparation, students examine why answer choices are correct or incorrect. Timed practice follows once they can explain their reasoning and apply strategies consistently.

Materials include official SSAT and ISEE resources, supplemented by Elevate Prep workbooks. I use Test Innovators for SSAT, ISEE, and HSPT preparation, along with Mometrix for the HSPT. I also create exercises matched to each student’s needs.

Homework is optional. After each session, I send parents a summary of our work and the next steps.

Joanie is a great tutor. She has been very accommodating to my daughter's needs for the reading portion of the SSAT. Her patience and suggestions for practice workbooks appears to be yielding dividends. Even though we didn't ask for help on the writing portion of the SSAT, I think that she has also greatly helped.
