Want to UNDERSTAND those stats tests in your class or for your project? Want help with your dissertation or thesis? If you are stuck learning SPSS or SAS, I can help.

I find research fun and make stats simple, working mostly with grad students who seek me out for thesis research +/or their classes. I apologize for it, but stats classes often are not taught well in understandable language. Social work or psychology students are common, but of course I am open to whatever kind of program you are in. Various students also have been in business, linguistics, auditory processing, and medicine. Statistics is pretty much the same regardless of the content area.

I’ve been tutoring and teaching since 1985 when I received my master's degree in biostatistics at the University of Texas School of Public Health. Then I received a master's in epidemiology from Columbia University in 1992. I've been doing this for a long time and I continue because I enjoy it. Explaining statistics in regular, lay language so that people can understand it and apply it is fun for me.

There is a ton of new terminology in statistics - fortunately I am bilingual and can guide you through what it all means. The funny looking symbols are just shorthand that tells you what to do with the numbers. I can show you that too.

Many classes also call on you to use SPSS or SAS to run analyses. Indeed, you’ll want to have the computer do most of the work instead of doing it by hand. But it’s one more thing to master. Learning SPSS with me is kind of like driver’s ed, where you are learning but there’s someone right there to show you how to do each step.

You may be overwhelmed with the whole concept of statistics, or simply want to more fully understand the material. In either case, contact me for a FREE phone consultation (once you are a registered student with WyzAnt). It doesn't cost a penny to talk to me and explore how we might work together to meet your needs.

SAS,

SAS

SAS is one of several software packages I use for statistical analysis. If you know another package, converting to SAS can be a bit challenging. It is like another language in how the logic is presented, so getting some help for learning it can be quite helpful. Once you know it, it's VERY POWERFUL. I love using SAS! I especially love the ability to use their MACRO language to shorten routine algorithms that you are going to do a lot of. This can be VERY HANDY.
SPSS

SPSS

I have been using and teaching SPSS for 30 years. We go step by step through each procedure. Once someone shows you how to do it, SPSS is demystified and actually becomes a handy tool.

With a masters degree in epidemiology from Columbia University (1992) and another in biostatistics from the University of Texas School of Public Health (1986) I can assist you with either subject. They really go hand in hand. I've taught break-out sessions of the main epidemiology course at Columbia and am solid in all advanced classes.

ADHD

ADHD

I am an adult who is ADD and who has successfully navigated my way through life, including ACADEMIA. From clearing through clutter, to keeping up with appointments & assignments, to sustaining my self esteem when I could not always accomplish what I wanted to, I have learned methods for making life work. Besides all of that, I have learned to LOVE and to HARNESS those traits that originally held me back. Once the debilitating parts are addressed, the talents can be capitalized on. Like that we often have more good ideas in a day than others have in a month (sound familiar????). Or how we can see solutions that others miss. What if you could use your particular talents to your advantage?

Having the best Tutor!!!

I consider teaching a very challenging exercise, in my personal experience statistics has became one of the most challenging topics on my field. Having a good mentor makes a difference!! Meeting Karen has been a an amazing academic experience. Working hand by hand with Karen through my Thesis, has made me realize how we can impact a student's life. She embodies a devoted, hard worker, and willing professor that just wants to teach and enjoys teaching. I felt she took my project as hers, always leading but also listening and complementing my thoughts with her broad experience and knowledge. I just have to say thank you !

Helped me pass my Data Mining exam!!!

I got help from Karen the day before my Data Mining exam. I have had several SAS tutors but Karen was definitely the BEST and helped me to understand the concepts and work through problems I didn't know how to tackle. I felt so much better after a lesson with her. I ended up with a B for the course, which I was SO HAPPY about. Before my lesson with Karen, I really thought I would fail my exam and I probably would have without her help. She is a very kind person and can explain complex concepts in a simple way. I really couldn't be more grateful. I fully recommend her as a tutor.

GURU OF STATISTICS.

Karen B. is really a GURU OF STATISTICS. I meet with Karen in a couple of classes and randomly asked the questions. But she gave clear answers without any hesitation. First of all, she makes the concepts clear by giving easy examples, and only then she proceeds with the problem that the student has. I am thinking to take some more classes with her in the near future.

Takes the mystery out of statistics

Finally I am once again excited about working on my dissertation. Thank you Karen for helping me understand my research and statistics. Your quick assessment of my learning style made a huge difference in relieving my frustration with my statistical work. I love the way you are able to explain the work in a language that I understand.

SPSS Statistics

This was the 6th week of a 8 week class. Karen had the full week to assist in understanding concepts that were difficult. She was diligent in appointments and follow through. She has a very good grasp of the subject and the week's result were good!
