I am currently a 2nd year Medical Student at the TCU Anne Marion Burnett School of Medicine. I have recently taken and have passed the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1. I find myself being fascinated by clinical science and am more than happy to tutor students who are studying for their Step 1 examinations. The subjects I have learned to master while studying for Step 1 include: Biochemistry, Immunology, Microbiology, Pathology, Genetics, Anatomy, Histology, Hematology, Oncology, Endocrinology, Musculoskeletal, Dermatology, Cardiology, Pulmonology, Nephrology, Neurology, Psychiatry, Human Reproduction, and Gastroenterology.

Before attending medical school, I graduated from Whittier College summa sum laude with a 4.0 GPA and a Bachelors of Arts in Neurobiology. I then spent 3 years working as a Wyzant STEM tutor and have always been in love with subjects such as biology, biochemistry, genetics, chemistry, organic chemistry, and physics. I have also provided tutoring for the MCAT, in which I scored a 517 (94th percentile). My score breakdown for the MCAT is the following: Chem/Phys: 131, CARS: 126, Bio/Biochem: 130, Pysch/Soc: 130. I have learned and taught effective passage reading strategies needed to solve difficult problems that students often get wrong. I strongly emphasize finding the correct pieces of evidence in MCAT passages and using it as support for justifying the correct answer.

I am passionate about teaching as it gives me great joy to see my students succeed in the subjects that I have studied hard to master. I am committed to ensuring that my mastery and teaching style is the right fit for you and ensuring that I can best use my skills to allow you to reach the highest level of academic success. I am happy to receive any of your inquiries through a private message here on Wyzant!

Animation

Animation

My greatest strength in animation is Blender which I have been using for 5+ years since it is one of the few free animating softwares everyone can use, and it is a software I highly suggest you get started with if you are a beginner in animation. I can understand how Blender can be daunting to use since there are so many functions and features to play around with but having struggled through it and navigated it all, I can show you how to create what it is you want to make much more efficiently without having to spend hours of your precious time struggling! I have been able to recreate characters that you might think come out of a Pixar movie as well as 3-minute shorts that involve 3D characters moving around! Yes! You can do all of this in Blender if you know how to use the software the right way, which is what I want to pass along to you! If you want to learn how to animate high-quality figures and Pixar-like animated shorts and movies, please message me so that we can come up with a time for me to dispense my knowledge of 3D animation on Blender to you! I look forward to working with you soon!
College Counseling

College Counseling

I am currently in the process of applying to medical school, and have received 3 interview invites from top schools around the country and only more will accumulate as it is still early on in the cycle. I have also received offers from top programs when I applied to undergraduate colleges and universities and used those multiple offers to leverage a nearly full-ride scholarship from my alma mater. Receiving a medical school interview is no easy step as it required writing a very coherent and compelling story detailing my motivations for pursuing medicine. It would be my pleasure to personally coach you on how to approach the medical school and undergraduate admissions process in order to become the most successful candidate. I know what it takes to be the best in applying to both undergraduate and medical school, I can't wait to pass on my wealth of knowledge in this process down to you!
Cooking

Cooking

As a self-proclaimed "Chef Morales", I have been cooking, baking, and pursuing passions for different foods for over 5 years. I have made restaurant-grade french fries, burgers, and milkshakes as a favorite American staple I serve to guests. I also love making pizzas very frequently from scratch and know how to make pasta and bread from scratch as well. In my cooking class, we will be making everything from scratch so that it will be as fresh and authentic as possible. Say goodbye to pre-made processed ingredients! I specifically specialize in desserts as I am a huge sweet tooth and love creating new types of desserts. In the past, I have made chocolate-covered and chocolate-filled donuts, churros, apple pies, strawberry pies, banana pies, french chocolate souffles, macarons, cakes, beignets, and more! I have made my own custom recipes that I would love to share with you to make these beautiful treats which I have drawn inspiration from my travels to sweet capitals like Disneyland. If there is a recipe that I do know how to make, I will more than happy to research it, make it myself first, and then teach you how to make it. I am excited to share my highly coveted recipes with you!
Genetics

Genetics

When I was an undergraduate at Whittier College, I took an upper-division class that was titled "Molecular Genetics" which covered topics in DNA replication, transcription, and translation in incredible detail and specifically looked at the biochemical levels of which these mechanisms operated. It was one of the most difficult classes I have taken and thankfully I ended up getting an A in. Having undergone such difficulty in this type of material, I can also use my expertise to help out students who may be struggling in the more intricate parts of genetics where it requires a biochemical explanation to fully understand the concept. Oftentimes, in that class, we would also have to relate concepts of Mendelian genetics to biochemical phenomena such as how specific mutations in amino acids can lead to the gene malfunctioning and why such an amino acid change was so important. Additionally, for students struggling with a software known as PyMol, I would be more than happy to help them out as I have had to work with that software back when I took Molecular Genetics.
MCAT

MCAT

I have taken the MCAT twice and earned a 517 (94th percentile) on my second attempt, a 14-point improvement from the 503 (55th percentile) I scored on my first attempt. I am more than happy to show proof of my two scores in our first session! My score breakdown for my 517 MCAT is as follows: Chem/Phys: 131 (99th percentile), CARS: 126 (71st percentile), Bio/Biochem: 130 (96th percentile), and Psych/Soc: 130 (93rd percentile). The maxim that I use when encouraging my students to study for the MCAT is that "The MCAT is a test that is all about finding easter eggs that are hidden within the passage". This emphasis on thinking of the MCAT like an easter egg hunt is a mindset shift that helps a lot of students see that the best way to improve their score is by improving their passage reading skills on all sections across the test. I would be happy to help you in preparing for this test and helping you increase your score! I specialize in tutoring the 3 science sections of the exam: Chem/Phys, Bio/Biochem, and Psych/Soc.
Piano

Piano

I have been playing the piano ever since I have taken formal classes at 12 years old. Since then, I have played in formal recitals around Southern California and have even composed several of my own piano pieces. I am very well taught on how to play the piano, sight-read piano notes, and the proper hand-eye coordination needed to play very difficult pieces. The Blue Danube, the 2nd Waltz, and Beyond the Sea: all of which involve a waltz-type of left-hand melody. I would love to teach you how to play those difficult songs. If you looking to compose your own piano piece, I would love to show you the framework I used to compose my own pieces and give you ideas of which chords to base your composure on. If you want to learn to play the piano with great fluency and blow away your friends and family, I am the person who will help get you there. Send me a message so that we can set up a meeting time and through practice, you will be playing so fluidly that even you will be impressed by the progress you have made! I have made a lot of mistakes in my piano-playing years and I would love to show the lessons I learned from them so that you do not have to go through them yourself!
Sociology

Sociology

While I was an undergraduate at Whittier College, I have earned an A in a class titled "Sociology and Inequality", in which the premise of that class was to learn about different sociological theories such as Marxism, Malthisuan Theory, Population Curves, Demographic Transition Theory, Structuralism, Functionalism, Stereotypes, Prejudice, and Discrimination, Socialization, Identity Formation, Symbolic Interactionism and more. In this class, I was able to learn these different theories and become accustomed to their definitions to the point where I was also able to apply them on the MCAT. Specifically, I was able to apply these concepts in the Psych/Soc section, to which I scored very well (93rd percentile on that section and 98th overall in the exam). I would be more than willing to pass down my knowledge of these concepts and theories down to students who may find themselves struggling in such areas and would be happy to teach them and guide them!
Track & Field

Track & Field

I ran the 400 meters, 800 meters, 1600 meters (mile run), and the 4 x 400-meter relay when I was in high school and college in intramural sports. I have been running for over 10 years and have achieved top times in these events which my personal best in the 400 meters being 52 seconds, my personal best in the 800 meters being 2 minutes and 5 seconds, and my personal best in the 1600 meters being 4 minutes and 45 seconds. I still run to this day and whether you are looking to get into better shape or to break records as a competitive athlete, I would love to help coach you to break your personal bests and push you to limits you never thought were possible. If you want to learn what it takes to be a track champion, message me to book a session with me ASAP as spots fill up fast!
Video Production

Video Production

I have recently become a Youtube channel content creator which has required me to learn the ropes of editing, which I mainly do on iMovie, but have been learning how to do it more on Adobe. In my editing process, I have learned how to add special effects such as voice changes, cuts, splices, insertion of images, and sound effects, which brings even more life to my youtube videos. As a small Youtube creator who is going through the process of figuring out how to promote videos using the algorithm, I can teach you valuable experience on tips and traps to avoid when starting out a content creation channel or simply when it comes to editing videos to make them look more appealing and bring extra life to them. I have also learned how to extensively use Canva to design high-quality thumbnails meant to attract the attention of eager new viewers. I would love to pass these skills onto you and look forward to helping you succeed!
Volleyball

Volleyball

I have had experience playing volleyball recreationally for over 10 years up to this point. I was part of an intramural volleyball team when I was in college. There, I learned how to properly serve, spike, and set up spikes for my teammates so that they can score! We played against other colleges which further sharpened our skills as volleyball players. When I did research at Caltech, I made friends with people on the volleyball team there. They allowed me to join their very competitive recreational club where I learned how to play much more effectively, passionately, and appropriately aggressively. I would love to pass on my athleticism to you and teach you the technicalities behind this awesome sport! Volleyball is a team sport and I know what it takes to be both a great team player and a great team leader. I look forward to helping you improve by playing volleyball with you.

Knowledgable MCAT Tutor

I met with Josh regularly for the last few months before taking my MCAT, and he was very helpful. Josh walked me through passages and would explain how he approaches them and how he picks out the important details that the MCAT loves to test. He knows the content solidly and can supplement the passages and questions with other relevant testable material. With his help, I have improved my Chem/Phys and Bio/Biochem scores and am feeling better about the actual exam. I really appreciate having had Josh’s help, and wish I had started meeting with him sooner.

Knowledgeable and patient

Josh helped me with several ochem topics like spectroscopy, acid and base reactions, carbohydrates, etc. Not only was he knowledgeable on each topic, giving me strategies and tips he uses when approaching problems, he also is super patient, which I really look for in tutors. I don’t feel uncomfortable if I have to ask him to re explain a concept. I look forward to having him as my tutor in the fall again!
