Hi, I'm Emma! I hold a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing and Poetry and have spent 3+ years as a college English instructor. I have published poems and short stories, and was a finalist in North Carolina State University's Poetry Contest two years in a row. I have won awards in both poetry and fiction, and have attended prestigious writers' conferences across the country. I am currently at work on my first full collection of poetry, as well as a memoir about growing up on a farm in rural East Texas.

I have 10+ years tutoring experience in writing of all kinds, specifically in high school and college level essay writing, and have helped students with technical writing, various citation styles, crafting stronger sentences, and essay structure. As a college instructor, I planned and taught undergraduate courses in creative writing, literature, and rhetoric, in which students read and discussed published works, drafted and revised their own work, and shared their creative pieces with their classmates in a workshop setting. I am familiar with a wide variety of creative writing tools in all genres, from crafting stronger images, developing characters, structuring a story, pacing, writing dialogue, weaving creative ideas, even how to write a sonnet!

The art of creative writing is near and dear to my heart, and sharing that love with my students, through teaching a class or working one-on-one on a project, is one of my favorite ways to share that passion. As a tutor, I have been privileged to watch clients discover their own ability to learn and discover through writing, and to share something of themselves, whether they are writing a memoir, essay, short story, or poem. To me, writing is all about self-discovery, about the depths of imagination and understanding in each of us, and if, through even one meeting, I help my clients discover more of that part of themselves, I am truly grateful.

Great writing teacher!

Emma was such a huge help with an English assignment I was working on. I had been struggling with writing the whole semester and recognized I needed some support with putting my analysis the text into words that flowed well and used appropriate vocab/syntax/etc. She was great with helping me find the right words to use, restructure my writing to make it more cohesive, less redundant, and more developed as a solid takeaway from the text. I will definitely be working with her for future assignments!

Great tutor for polishing work, ideation

I've had a couple of classes with her, and she's been instrumental in polishing my pieces to submit to high school competitions. Her grasp of structure and flow in both prose and poetry are great. She's friendly, but gives good constructive criticism. Would recommend.
