I’m Julia! I am a recent graduate from Duke University, where I acquired degrees in Sociology (Honors) and History. Currently, I am applying to Sociology Ph.D. programs with the ambition of becoming a professor. I love teaching/tutoring and while my professional goals align more with the social sciences, I have experience tutoring students in math and science too!
For the past several years, I have worked on and off as a private tutor for students aging 7 to 17. I also have experience tutoring neurodivergent students, having worked with children who have ADHD, ASD, and hyperlexia. Much of this tutoring experience occurred during the pandemic; I monitored several children while they were in their online classes and supplemented their online education during independent work times and after school. Additionally, as part of a summer internship, I became trained in dialogic reading, a method of building reading comprehension that involves talking to students about the source text instead of passively reading to the child. During this internship, I employed this method while leading numerous storytimes at local libraries. I have tutored children and teenagers in everything from learning how to read to algebra!
My tutoring style is individual-based and dependent on the student’s learning style. For example, if a child is a visual learner, then I will supplement their coursework with visual aids such as using pie slices to teach fractions. Or if a child is a kinesthetic learner, I will have them act out the book we are reading to help cement the plot into their brain. Furthermore, my primary goal in tutoring is to not only teach, but to enable children to feel confident in their studies. I implement this strategy by using praise and discouraging negative self-talk. I want my students to leave each session feeling more confident than when they came in!
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or want to book a session!
