I have a Secondary Education, BA in English and a Masters degree in English. I have taught at the college and high school levels and have years of experience successfully tutoring grade school and high school students and adults in grammar, reading and writing. My style is personalized tutoring-- tailored to the child or person I am working with. Not everyone learns in the same way, so I find what works for the individual student! And, I have a friendly easy going manner that seems to help student relax and enjoy learning to then get great results!!

I enjoy working with kids and adults from all cultures and backgrounds and believe in equity and respect for all. I get great pleasure out of helping others grow and learn and succeed!!

I have worked as a technical writer, in government, business, finance and software development. I am also an expert level Microsoft Office user, and can help with any computer technical issues as well.

I have always had a knack for grammar and studied advanced grammar and writing in college and again in graduate school. This has been an area of interest to me for years. I have developed effective ways to teach grammar to students of all ages and make it fun to learn.
Literature

Literature

I have studied and greatly enjoyed American and British literature from the Early American settlers and missionaries, and authors like Chaucer and Shakespeare to many contemporary authors, such as Virginia Wolfe, James Joyce, John Steinback, John Updike and many others. I have studied Irish and Russian authors and many European authors. and even an Icelandic author, Knut Hamsun. I was honored to be selected to travel to Ireland and London to participate in the James Joyce Symposium while a graduate student at Southern Illinois University.

Reading

I have worked extensively with students to build their reading comprehension and basic reading skills, as a Lab tutor in graduate school and at Northwest Vista College. Again, not everyone learns to read by the same method, so I tailor the teaching of reading skills to the individual student and can gain the best results in this way. Even when writing, students must learn how to carefully reread what they have put on paper, in order to edit and improve their writing. So reading effectively is essential in many areas and for many jobs, and I can help you become a better reader!

I studied the effective teaching of writing in graduate school and tutored students for 3 years in the Writing Lab in grad school. I then taught writing classes for 5 years while also working as a writing tutor at Northwest Vista College. For much of my career, I have worked as a technical writer in many fields, such as government, finance, insurance and software development. This vast experience helps me teach and tutor writing much more effectively!! I can help you enjoy writing!!
