When I was a child I loved being at school and learning. However, I didn’t want to be a teacher. Instead, I wanted to be a world-famous author. So in college, I majored in English and minored in Journalism, but could not find work after I graduated. In order to survive, I reluctantly applied to work as a tutor in my local school district. At the recommendation of a former teacher of mine, I got the job. As an AVID tutor, I worked with a small group three days a week. At first, it was just a way to make money but grew into something more. The first time one of my students had a “light bulb” moment I was hooked. Now, I specialize in working with students in grades 4-10 in reading, writing, and English language support.

I was lucky enough to be mentored by an incredible teacher during my student teaching internship. Through that experience, I learned many strategies for teaching middle school students. All of my tutoring methods are based on the things I learned there.

Reading: Many students at this level struggle with reading comprehension. Many have trouble answering questions after reading a work or passage. I have a step-by-step method to help students find the correct answers in these situations.

Vocabulary: In today’s society, information is available at the tap on a screen. Many students depend on “looking words up,” but when it’s test time, the tech goes away. I have numerous strategies to help vocab stick in my students’ minds, and yes, some involve playing on educational apps and websites. I just love words!

Writing: At the middle school level, writing becomes a scary task. Students are asked to write in many ways on a variety of topics. I can help. It is important that I let students write their papers and only act as a guide. I will be there through the entire process if necessary or just be a proofreader.

English

English

In English, I help students strengthen their comprehension, grammar, writing, and analytical skills while also building confidence in their ability to communicate clearly. I earned certification to teach English in grades 7–12 and hold a master’s degree in secondary education, which prepared me to support students across reading, writing, and language study. Since focusing my career on tutoring, I’ve worked one-on-one with students to improve essays, prepare for exams, and build lasting skills that apply well beyond the classroom.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I have a degree in English and extensive experience helping students in grades 4-10 build confidence in essay writing. My approach focuses on structure, organization, and clarity so that students can clearly express their ideas. I also provide strategies for brainstorming, outlining, drafting, and editing to make writing less overwhelming. My goal is to guide students through the process step by step until they feel independent and successful with their writing.
Fiction Writing

Fiction Writing

With a Bachelor’s degree in English and years of tutoring experience, I guide students in grades 4–10 through the full process of fiction writing. I specialize in helping students generate story ideas, develop strong characters, and structure plots with clear beginnings, middles, and endings. My focus is on balancing creativity with technique, so students not only enjoy writing but also learn how to craft stories with depth and polish.
Literature

Literature

I help students grow their confidence in literature by breaking down complex stories, novels, and plays into clear, manageable ideas. Whether a student struggles with comprehension, analysis, or expressing their thoughts in writing, I guide them step by step. Together, we focus on identifying key details, making inferences, and developing strong arguments so they not only succeed in class but also gain lasting skills as readers and writers.
Reading

Reading

I help students strengthen their reading comprehension by teaching them how to identify main ideas, make inferences, and connect details to the bigger picture. With a master’s degree in secondary education and years of experience working with students in grades 4–10, I guide them step by step through strategies that make challenging passages more approachable. Together, we build skills and confidence so they can understand texts more deeply and apply what they’ve learned across subjects.
SHSAT (NY HS admissions)

SHSAT (NY HS admissions)

I focus on the ELA portion of the SHSAT and general test-taking strategies. My expertise is in reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and evidence-based writing. I help students strengthen their ability to analyze passages, write clearly, and approach questions with confidence. In addition to ELA, I also teach students how to pace themselves, eliminate answer choices, and build strategies they can apply across the exam. While I don’t provide direct math instruction, many students find that improving their ELA skills and overall test strategies gives them a stronger foundation for the SHSAT.
STAAR

STAAR

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in English and have years of experience helping students in grades 4–10 succeed on the STAAR test. I teach targeted strategies for reading comprehension, vocabulary, and structured writing responses so students feel confident and prepared on test day.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

I work with students in grades 4–10 to expand and strengthen their vocabulary for both academic and everyday use. I teach strategies that go beyond memorization, helping students understand word roots, context clues, and usage so they can retain new words long term. My methods include interactive practice, reading integration, and tailored exercises that prepare students for tests and improve overall communication skills.
Writing

Writing

I specialize in helping students in grades 4–10 strengthen their writing skills across different formats, including essays, creative pieces, and academic assignments. With a background in English and years of tutoring experience, I guide students step by step — from brainstorming and outlining to revising and polishing their final drafts. My approach builds both confidence and structure, so students learn not just how to write for school but how to express their ideas clearly in any context.

Knowledgeable, effective and patient

My son has been working with Tegan for a little over 7 months now. I would highly recommend Tegan for any child's tutoring needs around English, Language Arts, Writing and Reading. She is very reliable and works extremely well with my son. She and my son connected right away and have had very positive ground breaking tutoring sessions. Tegan assessed my son's needs and tailored the sessions around them. She is extremely knowledgeable in reading and writing strategies, tips, and suggestions, and she communicates them very well. My son has a habit of getting off track and she knows how to ring him back in and get him focused. My son has a great new sense of confidence with reading and writing since he has been tutoring with Tegan. Thank you so much for all that you have done!

Excellent teacher

Ms Tegan has been tutoring my child for about three months. She is quite patient and encouraging, and knows how to work with the child who is resistant to changing their writing habit. Ms Tegan is also very flexible with her schedule and easy to communicate with. I'm looking forward to seeing my child make even greater progress in writing.

Tegan is awesome!

My boys have been tutored by Tegan for years. When they started they were both struggling with writing and now are among the best writers in their schools. Tegan is now helping my older son prepare for the ACT English and Reading sections and the scores on his practice exams keep improving with her help. I would highly recommend Tegan to anyone in need of help with writing, grammar, and/or related subjects.

Effective

Tegan's approach was effective and straight to the point. My daughter was able to improve her writing during the lesson and learned more in one lesson than what was taught in her school over the last few months.
