I graduated in 1980 with a B.S. degree in Secondary Education. I went on to several different careers in the construction and construction management fields. As a general contractor I found it very difficult to find personnel that had even a basic knowledge of reading and construction skills. I developed a system that used informal classes to improve their knowledge with the understanding that their pay would improve as they completed those classes. The program was a huge success. Production went up, employee pay went up, morale went up and it was especially interesting that as the employees self-confidence grew, it led them on to further learning.
I am a very patient teacher. I can put myself into the student's head. I do not believe in pressuring, but comprehension. Memory knowledge does not serve one very well, whereas the grasp of a problem and the derivation of its solution can help with problem solving in other areas. I need a quiet, distraction-free area to teach. Lessons are much more efficiently learned in a one-on-one situation without distractions.
