Hi everyone! My name is Melissa. I graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical Laboratory Science. As a college student, I realized the best professors were those who were able to break down the most complex subjects in ways that could be easily understood. This made the learning process a lot easier and kept me motivated. While attending university, I also worked as a part-time online and in-person academic tutor for my local community college, helping pupils with their homework assignments, and test preparation in the subjects of Anatomy, Biology, and Microbiology.
Working as a tutor helped me understand my pupils from a student point of view. In the two years of being a tutor I enjoyed motivating other students to keep up with their academic goals and devoted my time to ensure they understood the subjects well. I understand every student has a different learning style, so I would adjust my approach in order to meet their needs. I encouraged independent-learning as much as I could, first listening to the student's questions and concerns, then explaining the topic, and providing practical examples to help them understand the concept and applying it. I tried to emphasize the learning process over them just getting an answer to a question of their homework. I also enjoyed helping them navigate through their resources (such as text or notes). In doing this, the goal is to help students become independent learners.
I currently enjoy working in a clinical laboratory specializing in Microbiology. My daily work involves identifying bacterial, mycobacterial, and viral organisms. I am eager to share my experience in a subject I am passionate about. My background also includes Clinical Chemistry and Biology.
When working as an academic tutor, I was also able to help ESL college students in essay writing, and reading comprehension. Many of them were able to succeed in their core curriculum classes in order to advance towards the college-level courses in their degree plan.
