I have 15 years' teaching experience, working with clients of all ages, and subjects/skill areas. For the last 8 years, I taught English for students in the gifted/talented program. I have a BA and MA in English, with minors in Education and Literature, and I'm state certified in all Core Subjects EC-8 and ELAR 8-12, as well as certifications in gifted education and English language learners. Prior to public school, I taught courses at Texas Woman's University and North Central Texas College, in Intro Composition I & II, Technical/Business Writing, and Developmental Writing.

As a writing instructor, I'll assist in drafting and editing academic/scholarly writing, as well as fiction and journalism. As a writer myself, I've published articles for the Denton Record-Chronicle, Argyle Living, Lantana Living, HealthMarkets.com, as well as TWU's student newspaper, The Lasso. Before teaching at TWU & NCTC, I was senior writing consultant at both writing labs for 4 years, so I'm proficient in helping students develop writing skills at all stages, from brainstorming to editing, including conducting online research and using MLA/APA documentation.

Besides writing, I'm also knowledgeable in a range of other K-12 and college intro subjects including science, history, Spanish, and others. I also have strong technology skills in hardware & software including PCs, laptops, tablets, as well as Windows, Android, MacOS, and iOS.

Lastly, I'm happy to help students develop their learning skills, strategies, and habits to manage their time, stay organized, memorize challenging material, and use new resources.

ADHD

ADHD

I have much experience in this area. My younger brother was diagnosed ADD/ADHD as a child, and I worked with him throughout his middle and high school years, to help teach him study skills, and focus on his work together. I participated in his ARD meetings, discussed teaching strategies with his teachers. During this time I also conducted personal research and read personal account novels to see how best to help him overcome emotional and academic challenges associated with ADD/ADHD. In my coursework in my teacher education program at TWU, I also took classes for Special Populations students, and learned best practice strategies in our studies for addressing special education students' specific needs, accommodation processes, and learning modalities and study strategies. Besides personally, I have also been teaching for 5 years, from the preschool aged level, in high school, up to the college level, and have worked with students in my classrooms to help them recognize, and target ADD-specific strategies for college success, such as working with them to develop their focus, and use the positive characteristics of the disorder, to help them find productive and expressive outlets, and engage in their own interests.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I took and passed MATH 1314 (first-year math for Texas colleges) with an 'A', and have been tutoring other high school and college students in Algebra 1 and 2 for the last few years.
Career Development

Career Development

I worked for North Central Texas College as an academic adviser. I advised incoming freshman, and returning students regarding their course, degree, and career goals. I assisted students in navigating online and on-campus resources, acquiring information about financial aid, and putting them in touch with transfer university resources. I currently teach freshman students and often render guidance about their academic career plans.
Chess

Chess

I have played chess for many years now, since I was a child. I also participated in school chess clubs, and competed against peers. Since then, I have taught many friends and family members how to play, the basic rules of the games, and how to develop their own strategies.
Classics

Classics

A WyzAnt agent answered my query about what exactly was meant by "Classics"; s/he wrote: "The Classics subject refers to Greek and Roman mythology, philosophy, literature, and history." I am very well versed in the classics. I have studied the classics many times both in high school, and in college. I took World Literature, and Comp I and II, which both extensively covered concepts and themes from the classics. I also pursued extensive personal research into Greek and Roman mythology. I am very familiar with many of the mythos stories, characters, and concepts. I have studied the history and philosophies as well in college-level courses in World History, and Philosophy. We discussed classical philosophical theories such as stoicism, epistemology, logic, ethics, political philosophy, including Plato's The Republic. We also studied Plato's Allegory of the Cave, and Aristotle's Poetics, in a literary criticism and analysis course. Regarding literature, since I majored in English in my BA and MA, I have studied Homer's The Odyssey and The Iliad, Oedipus, Antigone, and more. Recently, I even visited Italy, and saw many historical museums and monuments marking classical and cultural events and traditions.
Dyslexia

Dyslexia

I have tutored many students in the university writing labs at which I have worked since 2010, where many students with dyslexic come in for help with their reading, writing, revising, and editing skills. After conducting extensive personal research into which pedagogical methods work best for these particular needs, I have learned to revise my own teaching practices to better suit the learning modalities of these students, such as multi-sensory instruction, and repetition. I currently tutor many students with dyslexia, through WyzAnt, with their reading, math, and writing skills. We work daily on enhancing their strengths, and improving on their areas of need, using a variety of tools and strategies. I also work with many students and co-workers when I teach English freshman in Composition skills. I often teach a variety of methods in revising, and editing, and the use of various software applications to help support these skills.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I have much experience with elementary aged children, and the course work at this level. I worked in a preschool for a year, working with the afterschool program, reviewing their elementary level literacy and math concepts. I also completed a number of student teaching internships at various local elementary schools, working both with the whole class, as well as small group instruction, and one-on-one guidance. I currently tutor two second graders, and a third grader with their reading and writing through WyzAnt, all of whom I have been working for over almost a year now, and each has shown positive results in their spelling, reading, and writing skills.
English

English

I have both my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in English. I am state certified to teach 8-12, which I did while student teaching, and now I teach at the college level, in Basic Writing, Technical Writing, and Composition I and II at local universities. I have worked in college writing labs since 2010, and still do today.
Film

Film

I've taken college-level courses in film literature, and film analysis studies. I often teach the use of visual and digital rhetoric, for both long and short films, and often assist students both students in my classes, as well as in the university writing lab in their analysis of long and short films, documentaries, other non-fiction media.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

I received A's in linear algebra in both high school and college. Since then, I have tutored outside of WyzAnt, in linear algebra since 2010 to friends and family, in order to pass college entrance exams.
Microsoft Access

Microsoft Access

I have used Access for many years, beginning in high school where they taught the Microsoft Office basic skills in my BCIS class. I found Access to be a very useful tool, and fairly user-friendly. I even used it for personal projects, such as cataloguing my personal book and movie library.
Microsoft Outlook

Microsoft Outlook

I have used Outlook for 3 years, as it was the emailing system used by the school district and universities I worked for. This was necessary for all work-related communications. Recently, I have also taught a few friends and co-workers to use the software as well, to help them organize their email files, clean out old files to make space, and organize their contacts.
Microsoft Publisher

Microsoft Publisher

I have used Publisher for many years both learning through personal trial and error, as well as formal classes. I have created a litany of materials using Publisher, including marketing materials for local businesses, working freelance, such as coupons, posters, brochures, social media websites, photography, etc. I also teach the use of Publisher in my Technical Writing course at NCTC, wherein I support students in learning of using the program to create their own marketing materials.
Microsoft Windows

Microsoft Windows

Like most digital natives today, I have used Windows since I was a child with my first PC. I am quite proficient in the use of Windows, to use both basic operations such as installing programs, file management, backup and recovery, etc. I am also proficient in more advanced operations like reformatting and partitioning hard drive space, disk management, customizing start-run programs, and diagnostic applications such as virus detection, configsys, disk defragmentation, and checkdisk function.
Nutrition

Nutrition

I've taken college-level courses in nutrition, health and fitness, and have conducted much research personally into the subject of healthy nutrition choices, as well as healthy dieting plans. I have many online and hardcopy resources and textbooks at home also. In my experiences, I have also met with licensed nutritionists at gyms, who have helped me to design healthy weight loss goals and strategies.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I took public speaking/speech classes in both high school and college; however, my better qualification is my teaching experiences. I've been teaching at the high school and college level since 2011, and have gained the experience of conquering my own public speaking anxieties, and so I am well able to teach others to learn their own way to do so as well. In my own classroom, I work with my students when they are required to do a presentation for my class. I work with them both as a group, and one-on-one to hone their public speaking skills such as volume, tone, pace, to avoid stumbling, and overall confidence and conversational demeanor. In addition to classroom teaching, however, I've also presented research papers at two academic conferences, for which, I admit, I was a little nervous, but with organization and practice I did well, and can teach others to do the same.
Reading

Reading

I am certified with State Board of Education for English, Language Arts, and Reading. I currently teach at college-level Basic Writing, Technical Writing, and Composition. I have worked at university writing lab since 2010.
Social Studies

Social Studies

I completed many college-level courses on these subjects, both American and Texas history, as well as state and local government, and federal government. I have also tutored many school-aged children with their understanding of history and political concepts.
Spanish

Spanish

I have studied Spanish off and on for many years. I first took Spanish instruction in school from 3rd to 12th grade, up to Spanish 4 in high school. In college, I also took Spanish level 3, after CLEP testing out of Spanish 1 and 2. Afterwards I tutored friends and classmates for about a year to help them review and practice their skills as well. I am currently conversational in Spanish, and proficient in pronunciation and spelling. In addition, after my initial teacher certification, I also certified in English as a Second Language, in order to learn best practices for second language acquisition theory and practice.
STAAR

STAAR

I have experience with the STAAR test, as not only a student, but also an instructor. During my student teaching education program, we reviewed the changes to the TAKS into the STAAR, and the attempts to re-align the test to the TEKS. We reviewed sample questions in class, and discussed ways to make the next generation of standardized testing students successful. As an instructor, during my student teaching rotation, I participated in prepping students in elementary through high school to succeed on their TAKS tests. I am proficient in each STAAR subject area, and level. We practiced test-taking strategies, careful reading tips, etc.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I have extensive experience teaching study skills for both children and adults. I teach many strategies for both organization, note taking, using color coding, flashcards, self-quizzing strategies, as well as software applications on mobile devices, online, and programs to help aid in studying independently. I have also led group study sessions for teaching and reviewing concepts, notes, and test-taking strategies. I teach various methods for remembering names and dates for history, pronunciation for spelling, and tricks like mnemonics for processes. I teach several test-taking strategies in my own classes, such as taking breaks, skipping problematic questions and coming back later. For timed-writing tests, I teach them time management and outlining. I also teach time management in each of my classes, by having them read articles, make a weekly schedule, and using their mobile devices and agendas to help remind them of due dates, and to prioritize what needs to be done first. I also teach them to organize both their materials, and their workspaces to be more conducive. I've also written articles in the university newspaper about ways to study, to minimize distractions, stay organized, plan ahead, etc.

As an instructor, during my student teaching program, I participated in prepping students in elementary through high school to succeed on their TAKS tests. I am proficient in each TAKS subject area, and level. We practiced test-taking strategies, careful reading tips, etc.
Web Design

Web Design

I teach Web Design concepts as part of my Technical Writing course at NCTC. I first introduce students to the topics of design, and have them evaluate other websites' use of various design concepts-- color, movement, font, organization, white space, etc. Then I teach and evaluate their ability to create webspaces for their own hypothetical companies, and later for their own digital portfolios. I introduce students to various online tools for free web design websites, such as WordPress, Wix, Weebly, and Webs.com. I have also created several web pages of my own, on various web hosts.

Not just tutoring: TEACHING at its finest!

Brieanna really knows her stuff! She was essentially two teachers for the price of one tutor! She advised me at every step of my writing, both grammatically and creatively, while offering insightful analysis and commentary in areas I hadn't even considered. She is an all-around expert in the field of English and writing and really maximized our session time together so that I was able to get the most out of it. Informative, clear, and concise, Brieanna was just the kind of tutor/adviser/mentor/teacher figure I needed. I was so impressed at her ability to shift between the academic and the creative, fluidly responding to objective and subjective questions and issues (sometimes all at once!) within my writing. I wouldn't hesitate signing up with her again and likely will. My experience was wonderful and I truly feel I am a better writer in great part because of her guidance. A+++++++++++!!!!

Fantastic Tutor!

Brieanna started tutoring our 17 year old son back in September, 2014. We chose Brieanna based on her profile in WyzAnt and we have not been disappointed! She's truly been a "Godsend"! Our son has ADHD, so tutoring can be a challenge, but not for Brieanna, who's been so patient, understanding and encouraging. She really relates to my son and he likes her a lot! Brieanna can tutor just about any subject. She's been helping our son with Algebra, Social Studies, Science and English. She's awesome! Brieanna is very flexible and easy to communicate with and her rates are very reasonable. We couldn't be happier with Brieanna and appreciate all of her help with our son. Brieanna has made a huge difference in our son's academic achievements! We would highly recommend Brieanna to anyone who's looking for a tutor.

Excellent editor and mentor!

I am a junior biochemistry (pre-medical) student attending the University of North Texas. As the conclusion of my junior year draws near, the medical school application cycle has just begun. As a part of my application, I am to write a personal statement and two optional essay, each having strict length and content guidelines. Honestly, I have spent countless hours studying the sciences, not writing, and I was very intimidated by the idea of my abilities as a writer being scrutinized to a degree similar to that of my abilities in medicine. I needed help, so I contacted Brieanna. I cannot express how much guidance, help and support she provided me over the course of the past three months. As an editor, she seamlessly condensed my initial rough drafts down to the mandated 5000 and 2500 character limits while retaining all important and vital points. She helped me in expressing each idea more effectively, succinctly and with better flow and continuity. Brieanna went out of her way to meet me at the university library, multiple times, to get to know my specific needs for the project and to devise a plan moving forward. If I couldn't meet in-person, her abilities in the use of Google Docs allowed me to peer edit along with her, from my home, at a convenient time for both of us. If you're looking for your writing to be more effective, concise and professional, look no further. Each of my pre-medical advisors commented on how moved they were by my personal statement and essays and I have Brieanna to thank. Thank you Brieanna for allowing my life story to transcend my limited abilities in writing and for supporting me in my journey towards attaining my dream. All the best, Chris.

Very patient!

Brieanna has a calming effect on my stepson and seems to be very knowledgeable about reading exercises. I think she is doing a great job! She is also very flexible with where the lessons are held - sometimes they are at mom's house and sometimes at dad's. Thank you!

Very helpful

Brieanna's tutoring was very helpful. I was completely at a loss in using Windows 8. My sessions with Brieanna have given me the knowledge and tools I needed to use Windows 8. I am now able to download photos from my digital camera and iPhone, sort them into folders by subject matter, and retrieve them to insert in word processing documents or send by email to friends and family. She helped me learn to utilize the Microsoft Word processing program, and to feel comfortable using my new computer.

Great Tutor, Very Reliable

Brieanna is very reliable and knowledgeable. She currently tutors our 2 oldest children a few times a week and has been very efficient in all of the subjects we have needed to review. She shows up for every session on time, if not early, and her schedule has been very flexible. We are very appreciative for all Brieanna has done for our kids.
