About Ashley

Bio

I've spent the last several years teaching college-level writing, linguistics, and ESL courses at the University of North Texas and across North Texas community colleges, and I'm now bringing that same instruction one-on-one. I hold an M.A. in Linguistics and am currently completing a PhD in Creative Writing, with a Professional French Certificate from my undergraduate work.

I've spent the last several years teaching college-level writing, linguistics, and ESL courses at the University of North Texas and across North Texas community colleges, and I'm now bringing that same instruction one-on-one. I hold an M.A. in Linguistics and am currently completing a PhD in Creative Writing, with a Professional French Certificate from my undergraduate work.

My teaching background spans a wide range: First-Year Composition and Creative Writing at UNT, intensive ESL courses (Communications and Writing/Grammar) at UNT's Intensive English Language Institute, ESOL Skills Development at Dallas College, and Integrated Reading and Writing at Collin College. I've also taught Linguistics courses including Discourse Analysis, Morphology, Syntax, and The Politics of Language.

Because my background is in linguistics, I don't just correct mistakes - I can explain why something works or doesn't, whether that's a French verb conjugation, an article error common to a specific first language, or a sentence that's grammatically fine but doesn't say what you meant. That's especially useful for ESL students and for anyone who's been told "this is wrong" without ever being told why.

I have completed all coursework for my PhD in Creative Writing at the University of North Texas and am working through my reading list and compiling essays for my dissertation. I also served as Essays Editor for American Literary Review from 2024-2025. Additionally, I have earned an Honorable Mention from Women of Writing for an essay and have published a craft interview with essayist Jacqueline Doyle.

I've taught ESL professionally for years, including intensive 8-week courses for international students at UNT's Intensive English Language Institute and ESOL Skills Development courses at Dallas College. I specialize in grammar, writing, and communication skills, and I tailor instruction to the specific challenges of your first language rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach.

French

I hold a Professional French Certificate and minored in French during my undergraduate studies, with additional research experience in French linguistics. I teach grammar, conversation, and reading comprehension at all levels, with particular attention to the grammar rules that trip up English speakers specifically, such as verb mood, gender agreement, and liaison, for example, since I can usually predict exactly where the confusion is coming from. My background in French phonetics makes pronunciation another one of my favorite subject areas to work through with students.

Grammar is actually where my linguistics background pays off most directly. I've taught grammar specifically at multiple levels — Level 3 and Level 4 Grammar courses at UNT's Intensive English Language Institute, ESOL Skills Development and Level 3 Grammar at Dallas College, Integrated Reading and Writing at Collin College, First Year Writing at University of North Texas — plus graduate coursework in morphology and syntax, which is essentially the formal study of how grammar works under the hood. That means I don't just flag an error; I can tell you the actual rule behind it and contextualize patterns rather than just fixing it one sentence at a time. Whether you're working on subject-verb agreement, verb tenses, article usage, sentence structure, or punctuation, I focus on building the underlying pattern recognition so the correct version starts to feel natural instead of memorized.
Linguistics

Linguistics

I studied linguistics in both my undergraduate and graduate studies, mastering the foundational subdomains of phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. My research afforded additional expertise in sociolinguistics, cognitive linguistics, and computational linguistics. I have published my variationist sociolinguistic research in American Speech (February 2019) and presented various research projects at multiple linguistic and multidisciplinary academic conferences.
Writing

Writing

I've taught composition to hundreds of students as a Teaching Fellow and have also served as Essays Editor of American Literary Review, allowing me to collaborate with writers across genres and styles. I love sharing my enthusiasm for writing and helping learners strengthen their writing through clearer structure, stronger arguments, and cleaner prose, all while maintaining their own unique voice in the process. Writing is an act of discovery, and it's a privilege to be part of a student's process.
