I have three degrees: a bachelors in Spanish from Indiana University, a masters in linguistics from the University of Texas at Arlington, and a PhD in linguistics from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. My passion is analyzing languages all over the world. I have published 120 academic books and articles. I regularly teach linguistics, phonology, the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), acoustic phonetics, and PRAAT, both in English and in Spanish. During my teaching career I have lived in Spain, Peru, Brazil, Guatemala, Mexico, and Papua New Guinea. I have worked for 40 years as a professor and field researcher, documenting minority languages. For ten of those years I lived among native groups in the Amazon jungle, where I met my wife! My organization has translated the Bible into more than 1500 languages in 133 countries. My favorite subject to teach is phonology (sound patterns). I love to help students learn how to pronounce new and difficult sounds, including in Spanish. At my current university, the student body voted me the best professor two years in a row. I enjoy interacting with students one-on-one. I usually start by asking them diagnostic questions to find out their level of understanding. My personal philosophy is this: Readers are leaders; therefore, always know which book you are going to read next. In my leisure time I enjoy sports, chess, and playing with my son.

When I graduated with my bachelors degree, I was named the outstanding student in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. I have lived in Spain and South America for 12 years. My wife is from Lima, Peru.

I was the top chess player on my high school team. I can play blindfolded.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions whatsoever, including about my experiences, qualifications, or location. I am happy to meet briefly with any prospective student free of charge to see if we are a good fit for each other. I would love to be able to help you!

Off the charts

This is kind of like telling people about an amazing restaurant. The more people you tell, the harder it becomes for you to get a reservation! But, I guess I shouldn’t be so selfish! Steve has set the bar with his clear communication, excellent follow-up, and is quite gifted at graciously meeting the student wherever they are. You won’t be disappointed with this wonderful instructor.

Early days but so far, so good

Only about two lessons in and it's a totally new topic for me but all good so far. Easy to talk to and ask questions (despite the limitations of talking through a laptop) and accommodating with times, etc. Very happy so far.

Amazing mentor (much more than tutor)

Steve is fantastic. My goal is to up level my Spanish to greater fluency and he helped me diagnose where I had challenges so I can fill in the gaps and gain greater command of my Spanish. Pace is great, materials chosen for lessons are great, he allows for a lot of input from me as the student so I will enjoy my lessons while also learning a ton. Wonderful and skilled.

Knowledgeable, patient, persistent, and fun

I have had many sessions with Steve, and he is wonderful. This past session though, I saw his real strength as I struggled with a concept. Normally, when he explains a concepts I understand the first or second time, this past session however, I didn’t. After giving (what I assume are regular) explanations and seeing that these didn’t work for me he didn’t give up but rather just found a new way of communicating the concept. If you need help he’s your tutor!
