Welcome to my profile! My name is John, I have a bachelor's and a master's in mathematics, and I have a great passion for teaching and tutoring. I've been working locally and online since I've been in high school, with students ranging from middle school to college, in both general ed and special ed. My students have come to me under many different circumstances; some students simply wanted to stay on top of their material, while others were behind in the material, for reasons ranging from struggles with time management to months of medical leave. As a tutor, I consider it my duty to approach my students' circumstances with care and accommodation. I also had the fortune to be employed as a teaching assistant for five semesters during my time at the University of Texas at Dallas, during which I taught over 200 students in calculus and linear algebra, and was responsible for creating and grading assignments, giving me a thorough comprehension of the structures of these classes.
I strive to create a deep level of understanding with my students, so that math becomes an intuitive process rather than meaningless procedure. In my younger years, I struggled to pay attention in class, so I informally self-taught a lot of the material, which grants me a unique approach. Calling upon my own experiences, I always teach with the perspective of the student in mind, using language that appeals to the way they think, rather than stuffy verbiage torn from the pages of a textbook. I frequently heard from my students that the time we spend in tutoring sessions or problem sections is much more helpful and instructive than their lectures. I am proud to say that I had a 5 star rating on Tutorfly, where I worked for two years, and received perfect performance reviews from my professors who I worked for as a teaching assistant.
I hope you will consider me as your math tutor. I do what I can to respond promptly, and try to be as flexible as possible for last minute changes on your end.
