I was fortunate enough to have had some very good high school teachers and college professors. After a successful career as a scientific software developer, I wanted to return the favor by teaching in public high schools for a few years. I was terrible with large classrooms, but I was very successful working one-on-one with students.

Sometimes a student only needs a bit of clarification to unlock their progress, while other students benefit from structured support. When necessary, I provide detailed examples, alternative explanations, and tailored practice problems. I work on a sliding scale, to provide affordable rates, especially when my students are sincerely trying. My core subject expertise runs from middle school through high school and math/science expertise runs through the second year of college.

BS Chemistry UT Austin, MS Computer Science TAMU-CC, TX Educator Certificate (Math 8-12). I worked for Lockheed Martin and CACI, testing communications systems and developing training and analysis simulations, radar image processors, and workflow automation tools. After retiring, I taught high school math for 3 years and substituted another 3 years.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I taught Algebra as a certified teacher and I am very familiar with the curriculum, homework, and tests. I teach how to read problem statements carefully and check work at each step. I try to find gaps in foundational knowledge and show how specific skills will be used in the future, using real-world examples.

ASVAB

ASVAB

Before I became a teacher and tutor, I was a defense contractor, developing C4I systems for the NAVY, the work primarily done at various DOD facilities. Before that, I maintained collection equipment and performed instrumental analysis on water, oil, and gas samples. In short, I have a broad set cultural, technical and mechanical experiences to draw on when explaining ASVAB material. I also have a really good set of test taking skills to share. I enjoyed helping a candidate study and pass the ASVAB. Besides tutoring math and science, we made trips to the library to study a variety of unfamiliar topics.
Chemistry

Chemistry

I have a BS in Chemistry and I worked a two years as a lab technician. As a hobby, I have continued to study biochemistry. I am very comfortable tutoring General, Organic and Analytic Chemistry.
GED

GED

I taught high school math for three years and was a general substitute teacher for three more years. I have more than one hundred hours of experience helping students in alternative or credit recovery programs.
Geometry

Geometry

I taught Geometry as a certified teacher and I am very familiar with the curriculum, homework, and tests. Much of my career involved geometric analysis and I often constructed simple props to help explain difficult concepts to my coworkers.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I taught Precalculus as a certified teacher and I am very familiar with the curriculum, homework, and tests. This was my favorite course to teach.
Trigonometry

Great tutor!

My son said he wants to continue working with Scott. He likes the way he tutors and he likes the different examples he gives him to understand what he's working on.

A Godsend

I hired Scott to help my son with Geometry so he would graduate on time. Not only did he help him with Geometry, he helped him finish Algebra II as well. Scott's kindness, patience and willingness to help my son meet his graduation requirements far exceeded my expectations. He was a Godsend in my humble opinion.
