I am a patient, energetic, veteran educator with 16 years of experience as a public school teacher. I have taught middle school math: 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. I am a patient, energetic, veteran educator with 16 years of experience as a public school teacher. I have taught middle school math: 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. I have also taught high school English: 9th and 12th grade. During this time, I have succeeded with individual and small groups of students in special tutoring sessions. I have a proven record of helping students to re-visualize a problem area and moving them toward greater, deeper understanding of the subject at hand. Tutoring has always been the favorite and most productive part of my teaching experience.
Most of my teaching career was spent working in the southern Dallas/Tarrant County area. I am familiar with how schools in this area function. I have two children who were public school educated and have gone on to thrive as young adults. I know good tutoring can raise grades and test scores which in turn boosts confidence which in turn leads to successful students who become self sufficient adults. Ask me about homework rules at my house.
As a math teacher, I teach processes, not answers. Students who can show a strong understanding of a process taught in the 6th grade is more likely to succeed when a related process is taught in the 8th grade. 6th grade is a key year. Students are expected to work with fractions and negative numbers. Fractions in particular is an issue that dogs many students on through their High School math courses. The better understanding of fractions a 6th grader can demonstrate, the better high school math student they become. Ask me about the peanut butter and Jelly ratio.
The best thing I can offer as a writing tutor is the final edit on writing projects. I have lots of experience working with students to improve their writing in the areas of clarity and effectiveness. Bring you paper and I'll bring my green pen and I'll mark up your paper and explain every mark. Ask me about the 4 steps of short answers.
I am at a point where I am no longer in the classroom everyday, but I still have a lot of teaching left in me. L
