I have passed the state exam for ESL endorsement. There are several ways to teach English to an ELL depending on their skills level. Some students are more interested in conversational English when they are more proficient in reading and writing. In that case, it would be necessary to focus on improving their oral skills. I would have common conversations, write what they would say and edit the writing. Then I would have them orally read their corrected speech, focusing on grammar and pronunciation. If the student is interested in writing better, I would focus the teaching on sentence patterns - noun phrases, verb phrases and punctuation. If the student needs help understanding oral language, I would focus mainly on comprehension skills for oral lessons.
