Hi, My name is Joey Shelton. I graduated from West Texas A&M University in 2012 with my Bachelor’s degree in History and in 2018 with my Master of Art in History. I have played drums for over 15 years in bands around the area professionally and have been asked to play over seas. I love music and history and love sharing my knowledge with others.
I currently teach 10th grade US History at a High School. I also hold TEKS specific tutorials with another history teacher there on Tuesday and Thursday. I have been a tutor in college with history and a proofreader for others at times. I like to break concepts down to kids so they are more easily understood by them. One example is relating the alliances in World War I with friends in school.
As a professional drummer I have been able to give some drum lessons in the past to kids. I always begin with the basics of drumming. That is time. When kids understand time they can understand most of what drumming is. I do this with an explication, but also allowing them to do a simple beat on the drums so that they cam see and hear what we are learning.
As a guitar player and teacher I do much the same thing, except I like to do lessons off of different chords until we know enough for our first song. Then we continue to build upon what we learn. I am big on practice but proper practice not the amount of time spent practicing.
