In my previous job, I was a tutor in precalculus and a exam preparation course for the TSI exam at Texas A&M for a year and a half. I mostly tutor college student, but I am open to tutor other age group.
My tutoring job was to help students who have not met (or barely passed) the TSI requirement to attend college. I, then, hold weekly tutoring sessions (around 2-3 session per week) for two separated groups of student that met me independently. I help one group to pass the TSI exam, which help by the end of each semester, while tutoring the other group to get better grade in Precalculus.
My teaching philosophy is "quality over quantity". I rather covered less material than having my students don't understand anything after each tutoring session. After explaining a new concept, I make sure that everyone understand everything by asking "am I clear" and leaving the five-minutes "uncomfortable blank" until moving on to the next things. I also often assign sample problems to reinforce their understanding. For me, math is like building a house; you build them brick by brick, layer by layer; however, if your foundation is either not there or not strong enough, it will collapse. It is the same thing with mathematics, if your basis is not strong enough, you won't be able to understand the next thing you learn.
I also take initiative in helping students, since most of the time students don't want to admit that they don't understand or they don't know what they understand. I also don't mind repeating myself. Once a student does not understand anything; I will repeat it over and over again until they understand it.
For a teaching profession, which I am aspire to be a part of, patience is the second most, if not the most, important. I understand the devasting feeling of being left behind because of not understanding course material (I am a math major myself), and I do not want any of my student to feel that way.
