Hi! I just graduated from the University of Michigan Ann Arbor with a MS in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Hi! I just graduated from the University of Michigan Ann Arbor with a MS in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Prior to that, I got my BA in Politics with minors in both Biology and Spanish from Pomona College, a prestigious small liberal arts college. I believe my strong narrative voice in my personal statements was key to me receiving a full ride to Pomona College as well full funding for my masters program, a skill I look forward to imparting on my students. I also served on the admissions committee for my graduate program, giving me a new perspective on what admissions committees are looking for!

As a graduate student at the U of Michigan I taught undergraduates in groups of 15-20. I led seminar-style discussions, lectured on scientific concepts, and hosted one-on-one office hour sessions for students struggling with material. Although undergraduates at U of Michigan tend to be high-achievers, each student has their own strengths and weaknesses as well as individual learning styles. I had 2-3 sections of 15-20 students each semester; despite covering identical material, I tailored instruction for each section based on the needs of the individual students in each group.

My pedagogy is premised on the idea that students should understand the *why* of whatever it is they're learning. Fostering strong critical thinking and reasoning skills enable students to approach even new and unknown topics with confidence and purpose. Memorization certainly has its place, such as with nomenclature in organic chemistry. But generally, my goal is not for my students to simply memorize whatever I've taught them. Rather, I want them to understand the logic behind a concept, a logic that they can then apply to new material in a positive feedback loop.

I am glad to work with students and, when applicable, parents to co-develop a learning plan that best suits the student's needs and goals. Please feel free to reach out to me, I will do my best to respond within the same day.

Environmental Science

Environmental Science

Throughout my studies both as an undergraduate and graduate student I have taken courses concerning environmental science, a truly interdisciplinary field. I've studied soil, insect, and microbial ecology as well as global change, biogeochemistry, and freshwater systems. I've also studied the human and policy components as a political science major with a keen interest in our environment.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I've always had both a passion and talent for writing, which garnered me a 5 in AP English Lang and a 4 in AP English Lit back in high school. I further honed my writing skills through my interdisciplinary liberal arts undergraduate education and put them to good use as a graduate student instructor at the University of Michigan, where I graded and provided feedback on hundreds of student essays. I am confident in my ability to help both struggling writers as well as strong writers who want to take their essays to the next level. I'm happy to help students at any stage in their writing process, from that first outline all the way to final revisions.
Personal Statements

Personal Statements

I have previously served on an admissions committee for a selective graduate program, giving me an insider's perspective on the admission process. I've written many successful applications over the years, resulting in a BA and MS with $0 of student loan debt. I've assisted in revising plenty of peers' and mentees' statements over the years. My interdisciplinary liberal arts undergraduate education further honed my innate writing chops which had already gotten me to state-level editorial journalism writing competitions back in high school.

Excellent, Knowledgeable, and Considerate Tutor

I had the pleasure of meeting with Yamile for a session in anticipation of a difficult Biology exam I have coming up in school. Not only was she communicative from the beginning, but even included a discount code for our first session! :) Yamile was punctual, and wasted no time asking what I was hoping to gain from tutoring and setting expectations. She broke down concepts that I struggled with in lecture into manageable components, and even made dry material feel engaging. I feel much more confident coming out of this session, and I look forward to working with her more in the future—I can't recommend Yamile highly enough!
