My experience in tutoring began in 2006, when I tutored my classmates through our Physics and Calculus 1 courses. Ever since, I have been tutoring, giving me 14 years of experience. While at Lamar University, I earned a Bachelors in Physics (2015) and a Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering (2015). While at Lamar University, I earned a Bachelors in Physics (2015) and a Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering (2015). My mathematical prowess and my engaging personality were noticed by the school, so I was donned a University Ambassador, an Engineering Ambassador, a McNair Scholar, and was allowed to take honors classes and perform research as an undergraduate.

Besides freelance tutoring, I have worked a great many places over the years. While in college, I worked at the Math Departments tutoring center for about 3 years, and concurrently at the Student Support Services multi-subject tutoring center for a total of 5 years. After college, I worked as a High School Algebra and test prep teacher. After that, I began teaching Physics courses at Lamar Institute of Technology, as well as tutoring in their learning lab. Soon, I was asked to also adjunct teach at Lamar State College-Port Arthur. That quickly became a full-time job, where I worked as a professor teaching developmental math subjects. This year, I have transitioned to teaching only online, and that has greatly freed up my time to pursue many of my passions, including one-on-one tutoring.

I do have other hobbies that I enjoy during my newly-found free time, such as video games, my van build, digital art, and skating, but a great deal of my time is put towards helping others improve their understanding of hard to learn subjects. I break down hard problems and connect them with real world situations to make learning the most abstract things feel natural and like home. I have had many success stories and am told quite often that I tutor better than the teachers or professors assigned to the class.

Typically a learning session with me involves two halves, and I recommend 2 hours if possible. During the first hour, we will tackle any pressing assignments, to help the student n

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I have taught Algebra at both the High School and College level. Many of my students had learning impediments, so I have developed a keen sense of gauging a student's level of understanding and tailoring the lesson just for them. I enjoy taking a complex topic and showing how it relates to real-world situations, to make the topic more relatable.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I have tutored since 2006 and taught high school and college since 2015. I have extensive experience in making math understandable to students who struggle with understanding. As a 5-star rated tutored, most of my clients wish I would have been their main teacher.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I have taught children from kindergarten to young adults in 12th grade. My love for math shows up in the energetic and creative way I show students that math can be real for them. I use stories and understandable examples to math math both fun and easy for all ages!

Excellent teacher!

We’ve had a couple of tutor lessons with Josh and couldn’t be happier. He is patient and calm while checking in with our daughter about the speed of learning. He does an excellent job of explaining the material so she understands. We would highly recommend!

Great and patient Physics tutor

I took a fast-paced five-week Physics II course with Mr. Barnes, and it was very helpful to have these sessions to review previously taught concepts and gain a better understanding of application questions I answered incorrectly. Mr. Barnes was personal, polite, and patient, and I definitely recommend him as a tutor.

Very flexible with meeting our scheduling and very helpful

Explained everything and showed my son exactly how to get to the solution of physics problems. Very helpful for a struggling senior in high school! Also, Joshua was very patient with his teachings of a difficult subject.
