Hello! I am Dr. Lauren, an academic writing and research coach. I work primarily with college and graduate students to conquer your writing and research projects, from short essays to dissertations and grant applications (and everything in between). I hold a PhD in sociology and taught at Penn State U. for 10 years, with an extensive research and publishing record and a history of working closely with students on their writing assignments.

I have taught hundreds of students as a professor, and I know that many students have great ideas but struggle to get them down on paper clearly. My philosophy now is the same as it has always been: I do not just help you get an A+ on that assignment, I teach you the tools you need to earn an A+ on your own in the future, again and again. I am also an excellent proofreader and can spot a grammatical error from a mile away--and explain to you how to fix it.

College and high school students, I can help you to: Write an essay; Plan, outline, and write a research paper; Organize your citations; Understand course material; Craft submissions for online discussions; Design a class presentation; Craft an academic scholarship application; and Write a college application.

Graduate students, I can help you to: Write, edit, and proofread a thesis/dissertation; Apply for a grant or scholarship; Craft a conference presentation; Prepare a journal article submission; Design a qualitative research study and analyze findings; Write an academic job application letter and CV; and Write a graduate school application.
I provide course assistance in these subjects: Sociology, Qualitative Research Methods, Women/Gender Studies, Racial/Ethnic Studies, Urban Studies, Social Work, Public Policy, Criminal Justice, Psychology, History, Political Science, and selected Humanities and Business courses. Students applying to college or graduate school: personal statements/statements of purpose are a particular specialty of mine.

African American Studies

African American Studies

I hold a PhD in Sociology, earned tenure as a professor at Penn State where I taught/published research with a core focus on sociology of race and ethnicity for many years. Taught Sociology of Race course for 12 years, Race and Public Policy course for 8 years, published 3+ peer-reviewed articles and book reviews with focus on race/ethnic relations, have read widely on African American experience. *FYI: African-American Studies straddles social sciences and humanities fields–I’m better suited to help students with social sciences-related courses or research interests than humanities-based (e.g., literature or art) courses or interests. If unsure, get in touch and we'll discuss/figure it out together!
College Counseling

College Counseling

I have years of experience helping college and graduate students write excellent personal statements and statements of purpose for both college and graduate school admission. I can help you craft an overall application that reflects the best version of you and your accomplishments and provide guidance in finding the right academic fit for you.
Criminal Justice

Criminal Justice

I hold a PhD in Sociology, taught 400-level courses each year in Admin of Justice Dept. for 10 years, including "Public Policy & Race" and "Women & Justice" courses, among others. I have special area expertise in gender- and race-related criminal justice research, but can work with students in most areas of criminal justice studies, such as research projects requiring research study design, qualitative data analysis (e.g., content analysis), or policy questions of, for example, data privacy concerns or other conceptual questions. I can help with research design and methodology, and love working with both advanced students as well as undergrads struggling with challenging course material. You can see my experience in this area in several highly cited co-authored research articles (with crim j scholars) in peer-reviewed journals like Deviance as well as sociological journals. Published an edited volume book, still rent-able on Amazon, on political ethnography, which touches on criminal justice/public policy/political science themes as well.
Personal Statements

Personal Statements

I have years of experience guiding hundreds of prospective college and graduate students to craft outstanding applications to bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD programs. I work closely with each individual applicant to write a unique, original, and meaningful personal statement or statement of purpose, along with other materials if desired, that both speaks your truth and aligns with what review committees seek. I’ve developed my own comprehensive and sophisticated set of application coaching materials, strategies, and tools to help individuals create stellar applications, which incorporates advanced training in college apps coaching that I’ve completed. As for graduate school apps: I’m proud to report a 95% success rate for students earning entrance to their top-choice grad programs. I know that many applications require far more than just a personal statement essay. I’m very ready to assist with all parts of the application experience, if desired–from writing an outstanding CV/resume or Activities List to researching and fine-tuning your perfect list of target schools to answering seemingly-endless supplemental essay prompts. As a former professor, I’m well-versed in academia & research (essential for writing great SOPs for PhD apps), yet I love working with individuals at all levels, from all backgrounds, at all stages. Regardless of whether you're applying to PhD programs, to nursing school, seeking a master’s in social work, a transfer student, or a high school senior who’s unsure how this all works or where to start, I can help. I understand the entire process, start to finish, and can provide as much or as little guidance as you seek, from personal statements to beyond.
Political Science

Political Science

I hold a PhD in Sociology, earned tenure as a professor at Penn State where I taught/ published research in sociology, public policy and poli sci-related issues, crim j, and psychology. Published co-authored edited book, “New Perspectives in Political Ethnography,” through major publisher, still available on Amazon today. I’ve helped innumerable political science PhDs, grad students, and college students do everything from successfully publishing research articles on suicide terrorism to learning how to write a strong academic research paper on topics from civil rights legislation to social movements to political theory, or even how to read and analyze course readings. I love working with students of all levels, at all stages.
Social Studies

Social Studies

I hold a PhD in Sociology and earned tenure as a professor at Penn State University where I taught 40+ university courses and published research in sociology, public policy, criminal justice, and psychology. I have years of experience working directly with students, both in person and online. I can help students tackle challenging course material, study for exams, or learn to write strong and clear essays and research papers at a range of levels. I teach them the skills to do it themselves in the future while supporting them to be successful in their current assignments.
Sociology

Sociology

I earned a PhD in Sociology from Stony Brook University in 2010 and taught sociology at Penn State University from 2010 to 2019. I was granted tenure in 2016 based on my research and teaching accomplishments. I have published 10+ articles and a co-authored book in the fields of sociology and psychology, with specialization in the areas of gender, sexuality, race, and advanced qualitative research methods, among many areas of expertise. I've taught 40+ courses in sociology and criminal justice as a professor, both in person and online.

Informative Session

I was only able to have two sessions, but Dr. Lauren was amazing and very informative. I was applying to grad school applications and was looking to rework my CV for my career. The feedback/corrections she gave was very productive and my confidence level when applying to future jobs was worth the cost. She also gave me a better knowledge of how to approach statement of purpose essays, making it strategic and focused on the best qualities I have as a candidate. Will reach out to her again for future professional writing needs!

Highly Recommend Dr. Lauren for Essay Assistance!

Dr. Lauren is amazing! She's been helping me with my admission essay for radiology tech school, and I love her attention to detail. She really takes the time to think about her feedback and doesn't just throw out generic suggestions. I appreciate how she tailors her recommendations to my specific work—it’s been super helpful!

Best Tutor

Dr. Lauren gave me amazing help with my Statement of Purpose. She was incredibly careful and sharp, pointing out every problem, big or small, and actively helping me think about how to improve.
